St. Mary Magdalene Church is the Protestant parish church of Neuenkirchen on the Lebbin Peninsula in western Rügen. Neuenkirchen (Rügen) is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen.
Culture and History
The church acquired its present Gothic brick form between 1380 and 1450. A medieval holy water basin is incorporated into a fieldstone at the south portal. Inside, there is a Renaissance pulpit dating from 1567, originally from St. Mary's Church in Bergen. A bell originally dated to 1367 is considered the oldest on Rügen. The church is freely accessible at any time.
A manor complex dating from the late 19th century is known as the Liddow cultural heritage site. The painter Reeckmann uses the buildings as a workshop and gallery; exhibitions and auctions are also held there regularly.
Nature and Trails
The Bodden Panorama Trail begins in Neuenkirchen. The 24-kilometer trail leads to Neu Mukran. From the Johann-Jacob-Grümbke observation tower on Hoch Hilgor, the view extends as far as Cape Arkona and Hiddensee.
Large parts of the Lebbin Peninsula, where Neuenkirchen is located, belong to the Tetzitzer See nature reserve. The area includes salt marshes, brackish-water reed beds, and diverse forests. Cranes and geese can often be observed there. In nearby Vieregge, the marina offers stand-up paddleboard and motorboat rentals.
