Historic Craft Workshops and Gingst Weaving

The Historic Craft Workshops in Gingst comprise the two historic houses “Kremkehaus” and “Efeuhaus.” The complex also includes a courtyard, a coach house, a studio, a forge, a small open-air stage, and a museum café. The workshops showcase historic crafts such as shoemaking, white sewing, watchmaking, and barbering, as well as a historic kitchen. This makes it possible to explore a range of different trades during your visit.

In the historic “Efeuhaus,” you can discover weaving on old looms and watch demonstrations up close. Weaving in Gingst also has its own history: in 1775, a weavers’ guild that had already existed in Gingst was renewed with the establishment of a weavers’ office for linen and damask weaving. Damask fabrics became a Gingst specialty and brought the craft to a new flourishing. Today’s weaving demonstrations connect this historical theme with a look at work at the loom.

Another cultural point of interest is St. James’ Church in Gingst. It is the second-largest church on the island of Rügen. If you are interested in the island’s churches, you can include it as a separate stop while exploring Gingst.

RügenPark: Miniatures and Rides

At RügenPark, you can explore the entire park on the “Emma” miniature railway. The cable car offers a different perspective as it travels over the pond: from a height of seven metres, it provides an overview of the park, the miniature park, and the “Emma” railway tracks. At the water ride, six riders control the speed of their gliders themselves and can experience centrifugal force. The miniature railway, the view from above, and the ride each offer a different way to enjoy your visit.

Cycling Tour and Walks

The approximately 32-kilometre circular route “Rural Life and Bodden Lagoon Idylle on Western Rügen” runs from Gingst via Ummanz Island, along the dike cycle path, and back again. This distance can help you plan how to fit the outing into your day. For a different kind of exploration, a puzzle tour through Gingst starts at the main portal of Gingst Church and takes about an hour.

Schlosspark Pansevitz is near Gingst. There, you can climb the old castle ruins via two spiral staircases and enjoy views across the park and its associated woodland cemetery. This adds a nearby visit as an option without combining the different explorations in Gingst and Pansevitz into a single route.

Market and Regional Products

From May to October, a Green Market is held every Saturday in the museum courtyard of the Historic Craft Workshops. Local products and handicrafts are offered there. Gingst’s market square hosts markets featuring regional products throughout the year. The two markets offer their own seasonal and year-round highlights in the town. The Gingst Museum Café serves refreshments and regional products.
