Grieben: Hotels and Accommodation

Grieben is an unusually well-preserved village centered around a village green: its extensive historic building stock illustrates the development of rural life in Northwest Mecklenburg. The entire village ensemble of Grieben is protected as a historic monument.

Villagescape and Name History

The village is laid out as a broad village green settlement. A stream runs lengthwise through Grieben, although it is only partially perceptible in the village center. The name Grieben, which originates from Slavic, means “mushroom village.”

History and Architectural Heritage

Grieben was first mentioned in writing in 1237. The village’s farmers built particularly spacious Low German hall houses, especially between 1740 and 1795. The historic farmhouses feature Ratzeburg gables with inward-facing horse-head ornaments known as Mulapen.

Most of the surviving hall houses have been renovated in accordance with historic-preservation requirements; some retain their original floor plans and timber construction. The historic hall houses were built as smokehouses without chimneys; this construction method is still visible in the halls and beneath the roofs.

Cycling and Nature

The “Villages in the Former Ratzeburg Land” cycling route passes through Grieben. In the Maurine-Radegast region, cycle paths run through hilly, open landscapes, using farm tracks, cobblestone roads, tree-lined avenues, and paved country roads.

Information boards in the Maurine-Radegast region present the area’s regional history. They also draw attention to the formerly restricted areas, which are characterized by distinctive flora and fauna. Grieben provides resting and nesting sites for storks.

Transport History

Since 1870, Grieben has had a railway connection on the Lübeck–Schönberg–Bad Kleinen–Szczecin main line.
