Rieps: Hotels and Accommodation

Rieps lies entirely or partly within the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. The biosphere reserve is considered important for peaceful nature-based recreation, environmental education and sustainable tourism. Its care zones include lakes, wetlands, deciduous forests and moors. Historically, extensive wetlands and open waters shaped the surroundings of the settlement. Rieps and its districts are described as being embedded in a landscape worth seeing.

History and Village Landscapes

The history of Rieps has been documented since 1158; at that time, the village was recorded as “Zlawt palus Ripze”. The historic villagescape combines a linear southern half with a northern half arranged around a semicircular village green. At the northern edge of Rieps, remains of the moat that belonged to a former fortified residence have been preserved.

Cronskamp was historically a circular village; its village scene includes small houses and an idyllic pond. Wendorf is a circular village with three entrances. In the historic part of Wendorf, preserved farmsteads are grouped around a village green and a pond.

Trails and Culture

Wendorf can be explored on numerous cycling and hiking trails. Near Wendorf, in Schlagsülsdorf, are the remains of an old knight’s castle; a visit to the castle ruins is recommended. The Klosterdreieck hiking trail includes Rehna, Zarrentin, Ratzeburg, Schlagsdorf and Dechow, among others, as stages.

Schlagsdorf is home to the GRENZHUUS, which features an exhibition on nature, everyday life and the border.

Geographical Location

Rieps is located about 15 km from the monastery town of Rehna. The village can be reached via the L02, the B104 and the A20, as well as via the B104 and the L01.

The Alte Schule Rieps offers two holiday apartments with open-plan kitchens, gardens and terraces; they are described as suitable for families with children.
