Groß Molzahn: A Fieldstone House and a Hike along the Molzahner Rinne

Hiking along the Molzahner Rinne

A hike along the Molzahner Rinne starts at the village community centre in Groß Molzahn. Conditions at the starting point may change, so check them before setting out. The path first passes through the Molzahner Rinne wetland and then through a spruce forest. This sequence gives the hike a clear structure: the stretch through the wetland is followed by the forest path. For planning purposes, both the starting point and the transition between these landscapes provide useful guidance.

Near Groß Molzahn, about halfway along the circular hiking trail beside the Molzahner Rinne, there is a narrow wooden bridge. Beneath it, a small stream winds its way into Lake Lankow. From the bridge, you can catch a glimpse of the lake through the vegetation along the shore. Check the condition of the bridge on site.

Other routes in the area

The “Grenzland-Tour” also passes through the area around Lake Lankow. The Mönch Ernestus Way runs from Ratzeburg to Rehna and passes near Groß Molzahn. The routes have different points of reference: for the hike along the Molzahner Rinne, it is the start at the village community centre; for the Grenzland-Tour, it is the area around the lake; and for the Mönch Ernestus Way, it is the connection between Ratzeburg and Rehna. This makes it easy to distinguish the routes by their respective landscape or location.

The fieldstone house and village history

The fieldstone house at Thurower Straße 49 dates from the 13th century. Its walls are about 80 cm thick, and the house is still inhabited today. Its date and wall thickness give the building a tangible architectural history. A different kind of transformation can be seen at the village community centre: a former estate stable was converted into the centre, which now serves as a cultural hub. The hike along the Molzahner Rinne also starts at the village community centre. Thus, Groß Molzahn offers a glimpse of two distinct building histories: a fieldstone house that is still inhabited and a former stable now used for cultural activities.

Northwest Mecklenburg as a regional setting

Within the broader destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the northern part comprises the landscape area “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay,” while the south is home to the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” The district’s landscape is shaped by terminal moraines, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coastal stretches, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. With its wetland and adjoining spruce forest, the hike along the Molzahner Rinne offers a specific route-based point of reference; the region’s landscape features provide a broader context for planning a trip.

Within the district, the “Radegast Valley” landscape conservation area covers about 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Lake Neddersee near Gadebusch. It encompasses the Radegast’s strongly meandering, largely natural course, as well as adjoining grassland, reed beds, groves, and swamp forests. This landscape can be considered a distinct natural area within the broader destination.

The region’s architectural history also offers a point of comparison: Gadebusch Castle is located in the town of Gadebusch in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg. Dating from 1573, the Renaissance castle is a rare example of Mecklenburg and northern German Brick Gothic Renaissance architecture and features reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style. Compared with the 13th-century fieldstone house, it illustrates the different periods and architectural influences found within Northwest Mecklenburg.
