At Lake Schaalsee in Kneese, two distinctive features of the locality come together: the municipal bathing area is located on the grounds of former border installations, while the Domäne Kneese Ark Farm lies in the natural Schaalsee landscape.
History and Farm Culture
In Kneese, you can visit a former manor house as well as remarkable barns, granaries and stables. The Domäne Kneese Ark Farm specialises in keeping old pig breeds, including Bunte Bentheimer, Angler Saddleback and Mangalitsa pigs.
Nature
In the surrounding area, the Niendorf-Bernstorfer Binnensee Nature Reserve protects Lake Bernstorfer Binnensee, wooded Werder islands and adjacent near-natural habitats. The protected area provides a habitat for breeding cranes, white-tailed eagles and red kites.
Fruit and Regional Processing
The Kneese Kernobstmanufaktur accepts visitors' own fruit for processing into juice or schnapps and offers courses on fruit tree pruning. It includes an approximately five-hectare meadow orchard where more than 100 apple varieties, as well as varieties of plums, pears and quinces, are preserved. The manufactory also produces single-variety juices and fruit distillates, which visitors can sample and purchase in the farm shop.
Cycling through the Schaalsee Landscape
The Schaalsee Cycling Tour is a 44-kilometre route whose stages include Kneese and Dutzow. Dorf Kneese, the Domäne Kneese Ark Farm, and the Kneese cider mill and distillery are listed as attractions on this tour. The Schaalsee Cycling Tour usually takes five to six hours.
