Gammelin Church is first documented in writing for the years 1335/1344.

Culture and History

Gammelin Church is considered a Gothic brick building on a granite-stone foundation; its choir has an octagonal end. The single-nave interior has a flat wooden ceiling and pointed-arch windows. A half-timbered vicarage stands beside the church. A free-standing bell tower was erected in the early 19th century and still stands today.

The chapel in Bakendorf also features distinctive architectural design: each longitudinal wall has four large round-arched windows, each end has three similar window niches, and there is a round-arched entrance opposite the altar. The chapel was built around 1835 in a restrained neoclassical style, with a symmetrical floor plan and symmetrical façade beneath a hipped roof. Bakendorf was recorded in 1230 as a filial church of Hagenow; the present rectangular chapel dates from the period between 1830 and 1840.

The interior of the Bakendorf Chapel was redesigned between 1963 and 1964, while the 19th-century rows of seats were retained. Since 1844, the chapel has belonged to the Gammelin parish. It is considered an exceptional building with characteristic stylistic elements and balanced proportions. The interior acoustics are praised during concerts; instead of a tower, there is a free-standing bell frame.

Gammelin also has a renovated communal bakehouse, which is regularly used for baking bread. A church in Gammelin is part of the pastoral area of the Emmaus Parish Schwerin Land (Southwest).

Municipality and Location

Gammelin is a municipality in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and belongs to the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. It is administered by the Hagenow-Land municipal association, based in Hagenow. Gammelin is considered to be located near the A24 motorway in the Schwerin–Wittenburg–Hagenow triangle; the K27 provides a connection toward the B321 corridor.

Improvements to the K27 corridor are regarded as improving access to the Neu Zachun water-ski facility.
