If you would like to combine culture, exercise and nature in one trip, Mäetaguse offers a variety of ways to plan your days. Mäetaguse Manor was first mentioned in 1542; today, its ensemble comprises 14 buildings. There is also a recreational area with various activities, the Mäetaguse oos with its hills, as well as options for cyclists, winter sports enthusiasts and families.

Manor, Burial Chapel and Museum

The manor is an important cultural landmark of the area. The Jäägrimuuseum is located in the former gardener’s house within the manor ensemble. You can also combine a visit to the historic surroundings with a visit to the neo-Gothic burial chapel of the von Rosen family. It stands on a high hill 1 kilometre northwest of Mäetaguse Manor. Those interested in architecture and local history can include these two destinations in their travel plans as distinct cultural highlights.

The year 1542 refers to the manor’s first mention and thus helps place the ensemble in its historical context. The 14 buildings provide a useful orientation for a tour of the manor ensemble. In addition, the burial chapel is located on the high hill 1 kilometre northwest of Mäetaguse Manor. This creates a travel plan that considers historic sites not only through a single building, but through several geographically separate points of interest.

Recreational Area and Landscape

The Mäetaguse recreational area is suitable for walking, Nordic walking and running. In the same area, you can cycle, go inline skating and skateboard. Skiing is also possible there in winter. There is a skate park next to the Mäetaguse school building; in summer, there is also a beach volleyball court. The facilities therefore accommodate various forms of active recreation without requiring you to commit to just one sport.

A distinctive landscape feature is the Mäetaguse oos. In places, it forms a winding ridge up to 15 metres high with steep slopes. Those who prefer longer routes can consider the walks or day hikes offered by the Alutaguse Hiking Club. These are available on the Mäetaguse oos in various lengths and difficulty levels. Mäetaguse Disc Golf Park has 18 baskets; the hills there offer views that are particularly appealing at sunset.

Active Days with Children and in Groups

For days with children, Mäetaguse Manor Park has a children’s course with various low climbing elements that can be used without safety equipment. The park also contains a fenced area that can be used for basketball or tennis. The outdoor fitness area has four different exercise machines. These individual facilities can be planned separately according to your interests: gentle exercise in the park, ball games, climbing elements or outdoor training.

For travelling by public transport, regional bus route 74 is a relevant point of reference. It operates on the Jõhvi–Vasknarva–Kauksi–Mäetaguse–Jõhvi route and serves Mäetaguse. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether your trip should focus primarily on the manor and its cultural attractions, the landscape of the Mäetaguse oos or the active facilities in the recreational area.

Other Destinations for Trip Planning

If you would like to compare Mäetaguse with other travel destinations, you can also find Toila, Kohtla-Järve, Kuremäe, Sillamäe, Kalvi, Narva, Narva-Jõesuu and Jõhvi here as well. This allows you to combine your accommodation search with your preferred mix of culture, nature and active experiences.
