Churches and Architectural History

Jõhvi St. Michael’s Church is a single-nave fortified church in the Gothic style. Single-nave describes a church interior with one main nave; the term fortified church refers to the building’s defensive character. St. Michael’s Church in central Jõhvi is the town’s oldest building. This brings the town’s history into view through both a specific architectural form and the significance of this building.

The Resurrection Church in Jõhvi offers another architectural facet: it was completed in 1895 and built from natural stone and red brick in the Historicist style. Historicism draws on older architectural styles. Compared with the Gothic style of Jõhvi St. Michael’s Church, this reveals a different architectural emphasis. If you are interested in churches and architectural history, Jõhvi has more than one style to discover.

Culture and Events

The Jõhvi Concert Hall is a specific point of interest for culture lovers. Exhibitions, classical concerts, ballet performances and rock concerts can be held there. The programme thus ranges from exhibitions and classical music to dance and rock. If you would like to combine your trip with an event, check the current programme for your planned dates.

The concert hall also houses the Amadeus Cinema, Jõhvi City Gallery, Jõhvi Music School, Jõhvi Hobby Centre and Noot Café. It is located near the Jõhvi Promenade and the town park. The cultural buildings, promenade and park are therefore prominent points of reference for finding your way around town.

Promenade and Health Trails

The Jõhvi Promenade is about 2.5 km long. Its central section, reserved exclusively for pedestrians, has cafés, seating, fountains and lamps with a lingonberry motif. These features provide specific points of reference for spending time along the promenade: in addition to the seating and fountains, the unusual lamp designs also define this section.

The Jõhvi Health Trails start at the edge of Jõhvi Town Park. Their main route is 1.4 km long and has a natural surface. The two lengths can be compared directly: about 2.5 km for the promenade, compared with 1.4 km for the main route. If route length matters to your plans, this is a clear difference between the routes described; the natural surface is another feature of the main route.

Advance booking is required to visit the Jõhvi Fortified Church Museum on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays. Bear this in mind when planning if your visit falls on one of these days.
