Narva: Fortress, River Promenade and City History
Accommodation in Narva
The Narva River Promenade is a good place to get your bearings between the riverbank and the city’s fortress history. The approximately 1-kilometre-long promenade is in the historic centre: the Narva River borders it to the east, and the bastion walls and Hermann Castle to the west. The harbour is to the north, and the Joaorg recreation area to the south. The promenade is a good starting point for sightseeing; Narva’s attractions are within easy walking distance of one another. At Sun Square, there is a fountain and a sundial, as well as a seasonal summer café.
Fortress and City History
Narva Castle covers 3.2 hectares and is more than 700 years old. It took on its present appearance during the time of the Livonian Order, from the 14th to the 16th century. The 51-metre-high Tall Hermann tower offers views of Narva, the Kreenholm factory and Ivangorod Fortress across the river in Russia. The castle’s permanent exhibition traces history from the arrival of the first Danes on the banks of the Narva River to the present day.
Põhjaõu, an experimental history centre and entertainment venue, is located in the castle’s northern courtyard. The Dark Garden offers another perspective on the city’s history: Narva’s oldest city park was established on the Victoria Bastion in the late 19th century and placed under nature protection in 1959. Tours of the casemates in the Victoria Bastion explain the historic defence system; escape games and other programmes are also available. Advance registration by phone or email is required to visit the casemates. Check the current registration requirements before your visit.
Art, the Town Hall and Historic Interiors
The Narva Museum Art Gallery is located on the Gloria Bastion in a former granary dating from 1777. Its permanent exhibition, “Elu või karma? Narva lood”, features almost 200 works, from the Baroque period to the present day. Gallery tours include both the permanent and temporary exhibitions; visiting arrangements may change, so it is worth checking the latest dates.
Narva Town Hall also reflects a range of influences: the building dates from the 17th century and combines German, Swedish and Italian architecture. Guided tours take visitors through historic administrative and event rooms; the guide also talks about the city’s history and legends. Those interested in a virtual representation of old Narva can visit individually or in a group. Families and school groups are welcome. Groups of ten or more must register in advance.
Kreenholm and Industrial History
The Narva Museum’s Kreenholm tours explore more than 160 years of factory history amid monumental industrial architecture. They are available by reservation and on Sundays at 12 noon from April to the end of October. Another tour takes visitors through the Joala Factory: it runs through a red-brick building and offers views from its tower. The free Kreenholm QR walking tour follows the district’s historic streets and shares its history through QR codes. The Narva Art Residency is located on the historic Kreenholm grounds.
The Narva Cascades are located on the grounds of the decommissioned Kreenholm Manufacturing Company. The hydroelectric power plant usually releases water from its reservoir into the cascades during the spring flood. The Narva Museum runs excursions to the cascades; availability may vary seasonally. If you plan to visit, check the latest excursion dates in advance.
Promenade, Cycling Route and Getting There
For families, the Swedish Terrace on the river promenade offers a recreation area with lion-shaped attractions for children. In the Joaorg recreation area, the bike rental shop lists city bikes, mountain bikes, fat bikes, tandem bikes, children’s bikes and scooters. EuroVelo 10 runs along Estonia’s Baltic coast to Narva, making the city a stop on the route for cycle tourists too.
For rail travel, the station is in a historic station building near the bus station. It is about 1 kilometre from the city centre and the border; trains to Tallinn run daily. As timetables may change, check your connection before departure.
