Sillamäe’s Coast and Cityscape

Sillamäe’s seafront promenade connects the historic town centre with the coast and makes the transition between town, sea and walking paths immediately tangible. It includes an adventure trail. There is also a multi-level, seven-metre-high observation tower. Those interested in the town’s architectural character will find symmetrical design on Mere puiestee that is characteristic of the 1950s, as well as façades in the Stalinist neoclassical style. A historic pavilion and an architectural ensemble by the sea complete this cityscape.

The cultural centre, built in 1949, is recognised as an architectural monument. Both inside and out, it preserves the Stalinist architecture of the 1940s and 1950s. In the old town, the staircase on Kajaka Street also recalls the period when the neoclassical development area was created: it was originally built in the 1950s and renovated in 2019. This makes it possible to explore different facets of the town’s history in several locations, without reducing Sillamäe to a single historic building.

Parks, Water and Coastal Landscape

The town park is located near the historic old town and the beach. It is intended for walks and relaxation, combining urban orientation with an open green space. Merepark is a larger landscape area. It covers approximately 20 hectares and is Sillamäe’s largest recreational park. Its features include a bathing beach, a pine forest, fire pits and walking paths. The combination of coast, forest and paths appeals to different interests: you can spend time by the water, walk through the pine forest or plan to use a fire pit as an integral part of your time in the park.

The landscape around Sillamäe also features striking water formations. The Langevoja Cascade forms a ten-metre-wide, two-metre-deep gorge with two steps. Next to the waterfall there is a rest area with fire pits, suitable for a picnic. The Ukuoru Waterfall is 7.5 metres high and has a single step. From there, views open up over the Päite Cliff, the town of Sillamäe and the sea bay. The limestone coast also passes through Sillamäe. Within the town, the Sõtke River is dammed by three dams, forming a cascade of reservoirs unique in Estonia.

Museum and Special Experiences in the Town

The Sillamäe Museum combines local history with engaging formats. The permanent exhibition consists of two parts: the first provides an overview of the town’s origins and development, while the second is located outdoors and offers experiences in virtual reality. In the basement of the cultural centre, a former air-raid shelter also houses a permanent exhibition on the town’s Soviet-era history. The museum is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00 and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:00.

Craft workshops provide practical and creative ways to engage, with activities ranging from simple handicrafts to elaborate embroidery. In the museum’s Müstiline Sillamäe Park, children can rent three pedal cars and several electric cars. The museum also offers guided tours in Sillamäe and the surrounding area. A particularly unusual way to explore the town is the adventure Salapärane Sillamäe – linna varjatud ajalugu, which can be booked in advance. With special permission, it provides access to a new exhibition and uses virtual reality to explore Sillamäe’s hidden history. The experience also includes tasting period-appropriate pastries and a handcrafted carbonated drink.
