Varberg – Coastal Path, Fortress and Nature Experiences

Varberg combines coastal experiences, historic sites and protected nature within a compact thematic area. The setting is particularly easy to appreciate along the approximately 5 km beach promenade: the coastal path connects Varberg Fortress with Apelviken Beach, bringing together two very different sides of the town. Between the Fortress, Museum and Bathhouse

Varberg Fortress preserves several centuries of history. This includes the power struggles of the 14th century, wars and the construction of the fortress in the 17th century, as well as a prison era in the 19th century. At the same time, the fortress is a landmark offering magnificent views. A visit can therefore be experienced not only through its history, but also through the views of the surrounding area.

The Halland Cultural History Museum is home to the Bocksten Man, a particularly impressive exhibit. The skeleton, intact clothing and oak stake are on display. The museum also features the medieval-inspired interactive exhibition Borgen. Another historical facet is represented by the present-day Kallbadhuset: dating from 1903, it is the only preserved bathhouse on Sweden’s west coast. Visitors can swim in the sea there year-round and then enjoy a sauna overlooking the Kattegat.

Varberg also offers a range of cultural formats beyond its major historic sites. Galleri Hamnmagasinet is an art centre with exhibitions throughout the year. Skulpturrundan is a guided cultural walk leading to several works of art in Varberg. For those interested in the performing arts, Teater Halland produces its own stage productions for audiences of all ages from its base in Varberg. Varbergs Teater hosts theatre, concerts, stand-up, dance and guest performances of various kinds.

Beaches, Birdlife and Longer Routes

Apelviken is characterised by long stretches of sandy beach and offers windsurfing. This complements Varberg’s historic side with a tangible coastal experience. Those seeking nature observation, on the other hand, will find characteristic bird species such as peregrine falcons, avocets and bearded tits in the Getterön Nature Reserve. Naturum på Getterön provides information about animals and nature, with birds being its particular speciality. Visitors can borrow binoculars and bird books there to explore the reserve.

For active days involving a longer route, there is the approximately 25 km Ã…kullaleden trail. It begins in the Varberg urban area and partly follows the old railway embankment to the nature-rich Ã…kulla beech forests. The options therefore range from a short coastal stretch between the fortress and the beach to a route leading from the urban area into a wooded environment.
