Apelviken has long stretches of sandy beaches and offers windsurfing and beach volleyball. Along the beach promenades, swimming is possible both from bathing jetties and directly from the beach. A new section of the beach promenades connects Apelviken with the centre of Varberg and makes it easier to reach the bay on foot or on wheels.

The present-day Kallbadhuset dates from 1903 and is the third cold bathhouse at this location. At Kallbadhuset, it is possible all year round to take a dip in the sea followed by a sauna with a view of the Kattegat. Visitors who do not want to swim can also enjoy the architecture, the sea and the view of the fortress over a fika there.

History and culture

Varberg Fortress is an important symbol of the history of Varberg and Halland as a whole. The first known structure on the hill of Varberg Fortress was a stone castle completed around 1300.

Tours of Varberg Fortress include winding spiral staircases, dark gun rooms and impressive views across the Kattegat. Halland's Cultural History Museum is located at Varberg Fortress and can be accessed via the castle courtyard.

The Bocksten Man is the most important attraction at Halland's Cultural History Museum. The museum's Borgen exhibition offers a medieval-inspired world of play.

Grimeton is home to the world's last complete and operational Alexanderson long-wave transmitter. Grimeton Radio Station was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.

Trails and activities

The Subbeleden is considered the southern extension of the beach promenades. Ã…kullaleden is approximately 25 kilometres long and begins in the urban area of Varberg.

The nearby Naturum Getterön provides information about animals and nature and specialises particularly in birds. Badhuset Pingvinen is located in the Håsten leisure area.

The swimming area at Badhuset Pingvinen includes a 50-metre pool. Under one roof, there is a swimming pool, an ice rink, a fitness studio and a café.
