Along the Halland coast, the coastal plain extends into the northern parts of Halmstad Municipality, with long sandy beaches and dunes. Farther north, the coast becomes more varied: beach meadows, cliffs, skerries and bays shape the landscape.

Halland’s eastern forest region comprises naturally occurring coniferous and mixed forests as well as open marshland with a pronounced wilderness character. Halland’s regional divisions include Falkenberg, Halmstad, Varberg, Hylte, Ätran, Laholm, Fjärås and Kungsbacka.

Nature

A characteristic landscape area is located in Varberg Municipality: Ă…kulla bokskogar is the collective name for around ten similar nature reserves in one contiguous area. The area contains 20 lakes, which together cover approximately one-fifth of its total area.

Åkulla bokskogar has nine largely interconnected trails for walks. In winter, there are opportunities for cross-country skiing, while in summer the landscape includes several bathing spots. The Toppbjär reserve is also home to the “Bexells talande stenar” – inscriptions carved into rocks and cliffs.

Haverdal Nature Reserve features a coastal dune landscape where visitors can swim, walk, jog and ride horses. Hökafältet has a 2.5-kilometre trail that is particularly suitable for wheelchairs, walking frames and pushchairs. A birdwatching tower stands in the northern part of Hökafältet at Lagaoset.

Trails

The signposted Hallandsleden currently runs for approximately 450 kilometres through the inland areas of Halland. Its eastern and western routes meet again in the Ă…kulla area. The route and division into sections are closely coordinated with public transport, making it easier to travel to and from the trail.

Hallandsleden passes through landscapes featuring old transport routes, ancient monuments, historic buildings and signposted attractions. Stättareds 4H-gård is a starting point for numerous hiking trails. At Stora Hornsjön, Stättareds 4H-gård rents out canoes and a rowing boat.

For cyclists, Kattegattleden is designated as Sweden’s first national cycle route. It offers 390 kilometres of cycling through a distinctive coastal landscape.

Culture

Äskhult has four historic trails of varying lengths, with stops covering the history and cultural landscape of the village. The events programme includes themed walks, Midsummer celebrations, a children’s day, a harvest festival, a storytelling café and a Christmas market.

Tjolöholms slott was designed in the Tudor style with influences from the Arts and Crafts movement. The cultural landscape of Tjolöholm includes numerous stone-paved walking trails. Tjolöholms slott is a cultural and historical setting unique in Sweden.

The Hallands Konstmuseum in Halmstad presents several exhibitions running in parallel, often based on its extensive collection of art from Halland. The collection includes, among other things, painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography, handicrafts and architecture. The museum’s family activities include stories for families, challenging art puzzles and free creative activities in the studio.

Varberg Fortress has been gradually transformed into a place for cultural experiences and beautiful views.
