Fjärås Bräcka is a glacial ice-margin formation that rises 60 metres above the Halland coastal plain. From its ridge, the view extends westwards over the sea, forests and fields, and eastwards over Lake Lygnern and the surrounding nature. The places Fjärås, Förlanda and Vallda are also part of the destination area. The Bräckaskolan bus stop is located immediately north of the Fjärås Bräcka nature reserve.

Nature and trails

In the Fjärås Bräcka nature reserve, several trails lead across the ridge and through its natural surroundings, also providing access to archaeological remains. The Älvsåker–Naturum Fjärås Bräcka section of the Hallandsleden enters the nature reserve after passing Fjärås Church. Another hiking trail passes the Li burial ground and continues to Svalhögen, where a lake and the sea can be seen at the same time.

The Sverigeleden also runs through the Fjärås Bräcka nature reserve and passes Naturum Fjärås Bräcka. Gamla Förlandavägen runs along the ridge and has origins dating from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. There are two ways to reach the beach: one route leads via a staircase, while the other goes down a steep slope that is farther away.

Landscape and water

At the beach by Fjärås Bräcka, you can swim in Lake Lygnern, Halland's largest lake. For summer boating experiences on Lygnern, ISA af Lygnern offers trips; one meeting point is the pier in Fjärås. Historically, the steamer ISA operated on the lake between Sätila and Fjärås from 1889 to 1924.

Fjärås is also connected to Lygnern Runt by bicycle, an annual 50-kilometre cycling race. It starts in Fjärås, circles Lake Lygnern and returns to Fjärås.

Culture and history

Tjolöholm Castle, built between 1898 and 1904, is open to visitors. Guided tours or a self-guided tour are available. The estate is considered a particularly striking Swedish example of the Arts and Crafts style. Its garden combines formal garden rooms with a more open park landscape, while Tjolöholm village lies between fields and shore meadows and was built in the National Romantic style.

The Fjärås Hembygdsgille museum displays household items from the everyday lives of earlier generations. Group tours of the museum can be arranged through a member of the association's board. In the Äskhults by cultural reserve, villagers lead themed tours in the roles of maids or farmhands.

The Li burial ground, Halland's largest Viking Age burial ground, lies near Fjärås Bräcka. It contains more than 100 upright stones. The Limmahögarna are Bronze Age burial mounds; of the three originally present, only one is well preserved. In 1834, a total of 48 people who had died of cholera in Fjärås were buried in the cemetery on Fjärås Bräcka.

At Brattabjär, south of Hjälm in Fjärås municipality, there are 11 Bronze Age burial mounds and an Iron Age burial ground with more than 45 graves. The easiest way to reach Brattabjär is via the orange-marked Hallandsleden from the parking lay-by on Rossaredsvägen south of Hjälm.

Visitor information

Naturum Fjärås Bräcka explains the formation of the ridge, its plant and animal life, and cultural-historical traces in the landscape. The visitor centre has an exhibition, a café and a shop. Hikers can refill their drinking bottles there; toilets are also available. Naturum is adapted for wheelchair users.

At the lakeside bathing area at Fjärås Bräcka, there are two barbecue areas with a year-round supply of firewood. There are two more barbecue areas by Naturum, for which visitors must bring their own firewood.
