Laholm – Art, Coast and Urban History

Teckningsmuseet in Laholm is the only museum of drawing art in the Nordic countries. It presents exhibitions by Nordic and international artists; its public programme includes workshops, lectures and concerts.

Culture and History

Laholm’s inner-city area is designated as a nationally significant cultural environment with a medieval urban structure and the ruins of Lagaholm. The old street network and the irregular town plan preserve traces of history from the Middle Ages. Lagaholm is a castle ruin in the centre of Laholm, directly next to the power station on the Lagan, and is already mentioned in 1231 in the land register of the Danish King Valdemar.

At Stortorget in the centre of Laholm stands the town hall, which was completed in 1794. It is open to the public and offers cultural activities, including exhibitions. The more than 100-year-old theatre in Laholm is a historic venue; theatre and musical performances take place there.

The Laholm Ceramics Museum presents a permanent exhibition focusing on ceramics produced in Laholm during the 20th century. Laholm’s public art collection comprises 40 works of art, 26 of which belong to the municipality. The art gallery presents contemporary Scandinavian art. At Bröd & Co, everything is baked in a stone oven – from sourdough bread to cake bases.

The Bronze Age burial mound Lugnarohögen in Hasslöv can now be viewed from the inside via an underground passage.

Nature and Trails

Stadsparken in the centre of Laholm features a jungle stream, a savannah landscape and a woodland section. Large parts of Stadsparken are accessible to wheelchair users and people using walking frames. In the Hökafältet nature reserve, trails lead over open sand dunes and through dense pine forest; there is also a 2.5-kilometre path specially adapted for wheelchairs, walking frames and prams.

Several marked hiking loops run through the Osbecks bokskogar between rare mosses and various prehistoric remains. The well-trodden Forsastigen follows the river for just over 2.5 kilometres.

Coast and Water

The municipality of Laholm has a 12-kilometre sandy beach stretching from Båstad in the south to the mouth of the Lagan in the north. Special windsurfing zones have been established along this beach. Skummeslövsstrand and Mellbystrand are particularly suitable for kitesurfing because of their gently sloping water.

The Kattegattleden passes the coastal towns of Skummeslövsstrand and Mellbystrand within the municipality of Laholm. Laholm can be reached from the Kattegattleden in about 20 minutes.

The fishing stretch on the Lagan in Laholm is approximately 8 kilometres long. The Lagan between the power station in Laholm and its mouth at the sea is considered one of Sweden’s best salmon-fishing waters. Laholm Tourist Information at Hästtorget provides maps and brochures and sells fishing permits as well as tickets for certain events.
