Skogaby is shaped by the waterscape along the Lagan and the history of the power station. There is also the bathing lake Gatesjön, as well as hiking trails and canoe rentals in the Hjörnered area. This lets you tailor your trip to your interests: the creation of the lakes, outdoor activities or the area’s cultural heritage.

Waterscape and trails

The Hjörnered Lakes stretch from Knäred to Skogaby. This artificial lake system was created when the Lagan was dammed at Skogaby, flooding the village of Hjörnered. The names Skogaby and Hjörnered thus refer to different parts of the same landscape history: the damming at Skogaby and the flooded village of Hjörnered.

Gatesjön is located on the outskirts of Skogaby, along Route 15. The lake is a bathing lake with a sandy beach, offering a different focus from the history of how the Hjörnered Lakes were formed. If you’re specifically looking for a bathing lake with a sandy beach during your stay, Gatesjön is a clear destination. Its location on the outskirts and along Route 15 also makes it easy to identify.

There are three hiking trails in the Hjörnered area. They can be combined, making shorter or longer hikes possible. If you want to adapt the length of a hike to your day’s plans, these trails can be a helpful starting point.

Canoes are also available for rent in the Hjörnered area: there are around 60. Advance reservations are recommended; check seasonal availability before your trip. This gives you a choice of hiking or canoeing for active days in the Hjörnered area.

Those arriving from the west via Ysby or Skogaby cross the bridge where the Lagan and the lake meet.

Power station and cultural heritage

Skogaby Power Station was built in 1922 and classified as a Class A building of very high cultural heritage value and national significance. Architect Theselius used a castle-like design theme for the power station. The building thus brings together a specific period of construction and a striking architectural motif.

The power station’s surroundings include associated facilities, workers’ housing and a farmstead in the cultural landscape along the Lagan. These surroundings also have high cultural heritage value. The focus therefore extends beyond the power station building to other features of the cultural landscape. Those interested in architectural and local history will find a distinct point of interest here alongside the water and hiking experiences.
