Särö – Coastal Forests, Beach Promenade and Resort History
Särö combines coastal nature with the history of a Swedish seaside resort. This creates a destination where forest walks, beaches and cultural-historical sites reveal different sides of the same place. The nature reserves Särö Nordanskog and Särö Västerskog, along with the preserved architecture from Särö’s resort era, are particularly defining features.
Coastal forests with exceptional species diversity
Särö Nordanskog and its neighbouring forest Särö Västerskog are among the most valuable coastal broadleaf forests on Sweden’s west coast. Särö Nordanskog is known for its species diversity, old trees and long-standing forest continuity. Forest continuity means that the area has remained forested over a long period. During an inventory carried out in 2021–2022, a total of 143 lichen species were recorded in Särö Nordanskog, including 35 species of conservation concern. Those who wish to experience nature not merely as a landscape backdrop but as an independent part of their journey will find a particularly tangible focus here.
Särö Västerskog lies west of Särö. Oaks and pines there are 200 to 300 years old. This age information applies to these oaks and pines, not generally to all trees in the two nature reserves. Särö Nordanskog is used for everyday exercise, dog walking and recreation. The beach promenade continues the Särö Västerskog nature reserve and is approximately 5 kilometres long. Snäckstranden is also part of this natural area: the beach lies within the Särö Västerskog nature reserve. This allows the forest, coast and beach to be viewed as different facets of the local landscape, without combining them into a single experience.
Traces of the resort’s history
Resort life on Särö became popular among upper-class social circles in the 19th century. Many villas and bathing pavilions from this era have been preserved to this day. King Gustaf V spent his summers on Särö until 1949, staying at Villa Gövik.
A central cultural-historical landmark is Särö Church. It is centrally located on a hill in Särö, in an area of national cultural-historical interest, and was built in 1922. On 14 March 2005, the County Administrative Board of Halland County declared the church a listed building because its origins reflect the history and development of Särö as a seaside resort. In chronological terms, the villas and bathing pavilions date from the 19th century, while Särö Church was built in 1922. The church thus complements the older sites with a later, clearly dated testimony to the history of the locality.
