Onsala

Onsala showcases various coastal landscapes as well as historic and unusual places to visit. On the western side of the Onsala Peninsula lies the Svängehallar-Fjärehals nature reserve, while the Hållsundsudde-Sönnerbergen nature reserve stretches across its southern tip. These are complemented by the richly furnished Onsala kyrka, a 2-kilometre exercise trail, a disc golf course open year-round and a guided visit to the Onsala Space Observatory. This makes it possible to explore the area according to your interests in nature, history, exercise or science.

Coastal landscapes on the Onsala Peninsula

Svängehallar-Fjärehals is a stretch of coast on the western side of the Onsala Peninsula. The nature reserve combines cliffs, beaches, heathland, coastal meadows and coniferous forest. The landscape therefore changes between exposed rock, sandy shore areas and vegetated terrain. Those who want to experience different forms of Sweden’s west coast during their stay will find several landscape elements in one place, without them having to be reduced to a single setting.

At the southern end of the peninsula lies Hållsundsudde-Sönnerbergen. The nature reserve encompasses three headlands and the surrounding archipelago. In the Hållsundsudde-Sönnerbergen nature reserve, the trail leads to an old pilot lookout. Its precise geographical structure distinguishes this area from Svängehallar-Fjärehals: here, the headlands and the archipelago lying offshore define the character. For travel planning, the choice between different coastal settings is therefore particularly interesting — on the western side, with cliffs, beaches and heathland, or at the southern tip, with headlands and an archipelago.

Historic Onsala and its maritime past

Onsala kyrka provides a cultural counterpoint to the nature reserves. It has a richly furnished historic interior, which is attributed to the prosperity of the privateering community in the 18th century. The wording refers both to the historical classification of the church interior and to the maritime past associated with this place. Those who explore coastal travel not only through landscapes but also through history and architectural culture can thus add another perspective to Onsala.

Exercise and activities

The “Presse motionsspår” exercise trail offers a clearly defined sporting activity. It is 2 kilometres long and complements the extensive coastal landscapes with a specifically stated route. Another option is the Kaparebanan disc golf course: it has 18 holes and is open year-round. The two offerings differ clearly in their form — one is described by its length, while the other is defined by the number of holes and its year-round opening.

Guided visit and access to Utholmen

The visitor centre for space technology and astronomy is located directly beside the telescopes of the Onsala Space Observatory. A guided visit includes a short tour that passes Onsala’s twin telescopes, as well as a viewing of the 25-metre telescope.

Utholmen in Gottskär offers another combination of accommodation and activity. At Utholmen, kayaks and SUPs can be rented through a Kayakomat. Access and the rental service are therefore explicitly tied to this location; both details should be considered separately from the coastal nature reserves and the other Onsala experiences.
