Ilsbo: Coastal Views, Nature and Culture

From Glavsberget, the view stretches far across the Gulf of Bothnia. Ilsbo also has bus connections to Bergsjö and Hudiksvall.

Culture Between Church and Local History

The present-day Ilsbo kyrka was built between 1843 and 1846 and designed in the Classical style. The construction periods of the church and the former schoolhouse fall within the same part of the 19th century: 1843–1846 for the church and 1845–1848 for the schoolhouse. Under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Cultural Heritage Act, it is protected. This makes it one of the town’s clearly identifiable cultural-historical points of reference; its construction period and style give the church building its own classification, without requiring an extensive local history for this purpose.

Another historic site is Ilsbo Hembygdsgård. The main building is a former schoolhouse built between 1845 and 1848. The Ilsbo Hembygds- och Fornminnesförening works to document, preserve and promote the local cultural heritage. Glavsberget, Stenören and Views of the Coast

There is an observation tower on Glavsberget with expansive views across the Gulf of Bothnia. Among the sights are the islands of Gran, Vitörarna and Jättholmarna, as well as the coast and islands of Hudiksvall. The unmanned observation tower is intended for independent visits, especially during the summer half of the year; in winter, the road is not open all the way to the tower. The seasonal restriction therefore concerns the road connection to the tower.

Stenören is a high-lying field of stones on the border between Ilsbo and Bergsjö. The oldest, higher-lying part formed shortly after the end of the last Ice Age, almost 10,000 years ago. The access route can be followed using the described sequence of roads and paths: From the junction signposted in the centre of Ilsbo towards Järnblästen, a road approximately 8 km long, passing Bjärtsjön, leads to Järnblästen. From there, a well-marked blue trail just over 1.5 km long leads eastwards to Stenören. The road and marked trail thus form two different sections of the same connection.

Bjärtsjön and Other Reference Points

At Bjärtsjön’s bathing beach there is a bathing jetty, changing rooms, a toilet, play equipment and a volleyball net. Bjärtsjön is also located along the route described towards Järnblästen. The lake is therefore both a bathing spot and a reference point on the route to Järnblästen. A fishing permit vending machine is located on Tallstigen by Igeltjärn in Ilsbo.
