Harmånger combines an open river landscape with cultural and historical sites and a wide range of excursions. The Harmångersån flows through the agricultural landscape of Harmångersbygden and also offers opportunities for canoeing and fishing. If you are looking for accommodation in Harmånger, you can therefore tailor your stay to your interests, whether they lie in history, nature or activities on the water.

Culture between the church and local history

One defining site is Harmångers kyrka. It was probably built at the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century. The medieval bell tower, or Kastalen, stands directly beside the church. Two bells hang in the Kastalen, both cast by Andreas Höök in 1665. They are probably considered the oldest bells still in use in Hälsingland. For visitors interested in culture, this ensemble offers a concentrated insight into the history of the area without requiring the historical details to be viewed separately.

Harmångers Hembygdsgård is also part of the local history. It is located in the village of Harmånger, fairly centrally on Karlsberg. The grounds include Harmånger’s old church school, built in 1866. Much of its furnishings have been preserved and supplemented. The Hembygdsgård also houses an old parsonage from the 18th century, which has largely been preserved in its original condition. This allows your visit to be expanded with buildings and preserved furnishings from different periods.

Harmångersån and choosing an excursion

The Harmångersån does more than shape the landscape. The river is home to grayling, freshwater crayfish and sea trout that are particularly worthy of protection. Historically, the Harmångersån was also an important salmon river. You can canoe and fish on the Harmångersån near Harmånger. The section of the Nordanstig Canoe Trail from Harmånger to Kustleden is scenic and has fast-flowing sections. You should allow at least four hours for this section. When planning your day, you can focus on culture, water-based activities or a longer canoe route, depending on the experience you are looking for.

Sindra and views of Lake Storsjön

Another excursion takes you to Sindra. There, a weir and a bridge lead to a picturesque area on the eastern shore of Lake Storsjön, offering views across the entire lake. Sindra also has an easy-to-walk path that is suitable for a family outing. Every summer, the Church of Sweden holds an outdoor service there. Sindra therefore appeals both to visitors who want to experience a lakeside landscape and to travelers looking for a quiet cultural occasion.

Local amenities and getting there

For a break in Harmånger, Kalahari offers a café serving drinks, sandwiches, sweet pastries, small pastries and ice cream. Kalahari’s handicrafts department offers handmade items and products made from reused materials for sale. This allows you to complement an excursion with a local café and crafts experience.

There are bus connections from Harmånger to Bergsjö, Gnarp, Jättendal, Stocka, Strömsbruk and Hudiksvall. If you are planning your trip without your own car, you should take these connections into account when choosing your accommodation and planning your days. For further orientation, you can also visit Jättendal, Gnarp, Bergsjö, Ilsbo, Strömsbruk and Hassela.
