Hudiksvall between Coast, Lakes and Culture

Hudiksvall combines the Dellen lakes with blue mountains, deep forests, numerous lakes, a small-scale agricultural landscape and a coastline. The municipality’s diverse natural areas include scree fields, caves, old-growth forest and hazel stands. The municipality recommends its nature and cultural reserves as signposted and easy-to-find areas.

Nature

In Norra Hornslandet Nature Reserve, visitors can hike and, among other things, visit boulder caves. Ancient coastal pines grow there, some of them more than 400 years old; one of the trees is said to be Sweden’s oldest pine, at over 750 years old. A marked trail through the reserve passes cultural-historical and archaeological remains, including charcoal burners’ huts, fire-cracked stone heaps and charcoal kilns.

Galgberget has a marked walking trail approximately 2.1 kilometres long through a varied forest. The northern slope of Galgberget, the pine heath forest on the summit and the sunlit pine forest on the southern side have high natural value.

A route of approximately 2.2 kilometres for walking and jogging runs around Lillfjärden in the centre of Hudiksvall. Lillfjärden has a diverse birdlife, including numerous gulls and geese; there is also an opportunity to observe the highly endangered lesser white-fronted goose at close range.

Hölick Nature Reserve has marked trails of 2 and 7 kilometres, with the shorter trail leading to a cave system. In Sofieholmforsen Nature Reserve, a protected area encompasses a 300-metre stretch of watercourse with a drop of approximately 20 metres at the mouth of the Nianån. There is also a waterside walking trail with bridges, benches, barbecue areas and a wind shelter.

Hudiksvall Municipality has cross-country ski trails, illuminated training trails and opportunities for alpine skiing.

Culture and History

The Hälsingland Museum presents cultural-historical and art-related exhibitions and provides access to educational activities, collections and archives. The museum is approximately a five-minute walk from the bus stops in the centre and from Hudiksvall railway station.

Hudiksvalls Teater is a wooden theatre built in 1881 and inaugurated in 1882. It is regularly used by Riksteatern and local theatre associations. The local theatre scene also includes Glada Hudik-teatern, an inclusive theatre group in which actors with and without intellectual disabilities perform side by side.

Fiskarstan is one of the best-preserved districts of Hudiksvall. Narrow streets, wooden houses and the proximity to the water provide a clear impression of the town’s history. A selection of the Hälsingegårdar farmhouses is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Where possible, visitors can watch sweets being made at Fagerströms Karamellfabrik and buy the factory’s products in the caramel shop.

Coast and Lakes

The Dellen region, with the northern and southern Dellen lakes, is suitable for excursions, swimming, outdoor leisure activities and other experiences. Avholmsberget offers expansive views over the lakes and the surrounding landscape.

Hudiksvall Municipality has approximately 50 kilometres of coastline, an archipelago landscape, harbours and bathing places; some harbours are classified as guest harbours.

In Kuggörarna Nature Reserve, visitors can hike along the path by the fishing village. The fishing village of Kuggörarna forms the core of a valuable cultural landscape and includes a chapel dating from 1776–1777. The nature reserve also contains archipelago pines that are 250–300 years old.

Landscape

Vallåsen is a 330-metre-high mountain massif with steep slopes, ravines and hollows that create habitats for rare and endangered species. Vallåsen comprises old pine heath, mixed coniferous forest and spruce forest with high natural value.
