Helnæs between Village History and Coastal Paths

On Helnæs, the landscape ranges from historic village structures to natural areas and coastal paths. Helnæs By is considered a loosely planned, winding roadside village: farms and houses are situated along the course of the road. It is believed that the village was established during the transitional period between the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, around 1100 and thereafter. Helnæs Kirke stands on a hill overlooking Helnæs Made. It was consecrated in 1618 and expanded in 1694.

Hiking Trails, Birdlife and Distinctive Landscapes

At Bobakkerne, a marked hiking route of approximately 2 kilometres starts at the car park. Galgebakken is 29 metres high; an observation point at its summit offers expansive views. In the heart of Helnæs Made, a marked hiking route leads through the natural area from a car park; the tour is approximately 3 kilometres long. Lapwings, oystercatchers, redshanks and snipes breed on Helnæs Made. The protected early purple orchid is also found there. At the northern tip of Helnæs lies Halen, a long, elevated ridge that is now completely untouched. The ridge was formed during the Ice Age. Thanks to grazing that has taken place without artificial fertiliser since time immemorial, Bobakkerne and Halen are home to species-rich dry grassland flora.

Helnæs Lighthouse and Coastal Paths

Lindehovedvej branches off from Helnæs By and leads to Lindehoved, where Helnæs Lighthouse is located. At the end of Lindehovedvej, there is a car park and a public toilet near Helnæs Lighthouse. A path leads down from the car park to the rocky coast. A path along the cliff edge follows the coast north to the beach at Helnæs Made. Helnæs Mølle has now been transformed into a nature and recreation centre. The dry toilet at the car park in Bobakkerne is accessible to wheelchair users. The flat terrain on Maden allows people with reduced mobility to use the gravel path „Overdrevet“ and the coastal beach meadow.

Getting There, Cycling and Kitesurfing

Helnæs can be reached from Funen by car or bicycle via the Langøre causeway. A local bus runs from Assens to Helnæs. There are no cycle paths on Helnæs. A marked cycling route leads from Assens to Helnæs and is approximately 47 kilometres long. Kitesurfing is also possible on Helnæs. This means that short hikes, a longer marked cycling tour and a water sports activity are available as different options when planning your trip.

Art, Creative Activities and Regional Cuisine

Galleri Langager is located in the former dairy on Helnæs and presents changing exhibitions by various Danish artists. The gallery offers events with creative activities for children and adults. Galleri Knadring displays art collected over many years, including a significant Bornholm collection and an extensive NASA image gallery. At Spisestedet AKS, potatoes from Helnæs are a staple ingredient in the dishes.
