Discover Nättraby: Hiking Trails, Nättrabyån and Culture

Nättraby offers different perspectives on nature, water and cultural history. These perspectives include the 5 km circular Skärvaleden hiking trail, the Nättrabyån river, a medieval church and a museum dedicated to the history of roads and routes. This gives Nättraby different points of connection for a stay: you can get to know the area through hiking landscapes, a waterway or preserved architectural and transport history.

Hiking between Skärva and Nättrabyån

Skärvaleden is a 5 km circular hiking trail through beaches, meadows, pastures, groves, marshes and historic sites. The landscape alternates between open areas, wooded sections and wet habitats. Those who reach Nättraby by bicycle or bus can access Skärvaleden there through Skärva Nature Reserve. The route is therefore clearly defined not only by its name but also by its connection to different types of landscape.

Another circular hiking trail follows Skärvaleden & Nättrabyleden. It runs along the Nättrabyån and passes Nättraby kyrka. This makes it possible to combine riverbanks and local history within a single route. There is also a specific place to spend time by the river itself: the outdoor gym in Nättraby is located on the meadow next to the Nättrabyån, opposite the village shop, and consists of nine different pieces of equipment.

The Nättrabyån as a waterway

The river shapes Nättraby not only as part of the hiking trails. The M/S Axel travels along the Nättrabyån to Nättraby. During the boat trip, you travel upstream on the idyllic waters of the Nättrabyån beneath lush green foliage. Alongside the route through the nature reserve and the historic sites, this provides an explicitly river-focused perspective on the area.

Medieval church and the history of roads and routes

Nättraby kyrka was built in the 12th century and is one of the few surviving medieval churches in Blekinge. It is a Romanesque apse church made of plastered granite and fieldstone; the nave, chancel and apse have been preserved. The individual building components make the medieval structure understandable as a clearly recognisable architectural unit.

A different historical perspective is offered by the Nättraby Vägmuseum. It is the world’s first open-air museum dedicated to the history of travel and routes on land, rails, water and ice. The thematic scope therefore extends beyond roads in the narrower sense and includes the various ways in which people have crossed landscapes.

Glass art in Nättraby

The local culture also includes Malin Mena. Since 2006, she has operated her studio glassworks in a converted 1950s water tower in Nättraby, just outside Karlskrona in Blekinge. The site thereby combines contemporary glass art with a converted 1950s water tower.
