Jämjö: Nature, Culture and Illuminated Trails

Jämjö combines nature experiences, historical traces and active routes in a compact setting. Ådalen is particularly characteristic: the nature reserve is located directly next to the town of Jämjö in eastern Blekinge and is considered a geologically complex, unique formation that is also rare in southern Sweden. When choosing where to stay, it is therefore especially interesting to consider how closely nature, local history and various route options can be combined thematically.

Ã…dalen: Nature area with routes of various lengths

The Hammarbyån, part of the Åbyån, winds through Ådalen amid fine-grained sediments. For the most part, the river has retained its natural original form. There are several walking trails and rest areas in the area. From central Jämjö, you can walk or cycle to the nature reserve. The nearest bus stop to Ådalen is Jämjö centrum; from there, it is about 500 metres on foot to the nature reserve.

The Ådalen walking trail in Jämjö is 4.0 kilometres long. A 2-kilometre section runs from Jämjö kyrka to Orionstugan. At the same time, you should take the limited accessibility into account: the trails in Ådalen have not been adapted to be accessible for people with disabilities.

Illuminated running and ski trails

For active days, there are illuminated running and ski trails on Furudalsvägen in Jämjö, with lengths of 870 metres, 1.4 kilometres, 2.4 kilometres, 5.0 kilometres, 8.4 kilometres and 10.2 kilometres. The selection therefore ranges from a short loop to considerably longer routes.

Jämjö kyrka and local history

Jämjö kyrka is protected as an ecclesiastical cultural heritage monument under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Cultural Heritage Act. It was inaugurated by Bishop Wilhelm Faxe on 22 October 1826 and was named Oscars kyrka after the Crown Prince at the time. Its history is still visible in the present building: the former medieval stone church in Jämjö was demolished from 27 April 1824 onwards, and stones from that church were reused in the construction of the present Jämjö kyrka.

Jämjö Skjutsstation is also part of the town’s historical landmarks. Its origins as a travel centre date back to the 17th century. The Östra Blekinge Hembygdsförening holds photographic exhibitions there. The Skjutsstation thus supplements the history of the church with another chapter in the local history of travel and the town.

Practical information in the town

Jämjö Library is accessible to wheelchair users. There is a wheelchair lift and a door opener at the front entrance, and a ramp at the rear entrance; a disabled parking space is also available. After registration, the library offers access every day from 07:00 to 22:00 as part of the unmanned extended-hours service. The facilities and services also include family history research programmes and free Wi-Fi.
