Tengslemark and Sejerø Bay

Tengslemark Beach is located on Sejerø Bay and in the immediate surroundings of Tengslemark. The connection to the coast therefore begins at a beach on the bay and also leads into the landscape area of Tengslemark Lyng. Tengslemark Lyng is one of the holiday-home areas within coastal strategy route S1.06.02. For orientation within the area, the coast and the landscape area thus stand alongside each other as two specific themes. Sejerø Bay is the maritime starting point, while Tengslemark Lyng broadens the view to the coastal landscape.

Coast and Protected Nature

Coastal strategy route S1.06.02, where Tengslemark Lyng is located, includes protected nature in the form of meadows, heaths, marshes, dry grasslands, coastal meadows and lakes. The natural area is therefore not limited to the immediate beach. Meadows, heaths, marshes, dry grasslands, coastal meadows and lakes represent different landscape forms within this coastal area. Tengslemark’s coastal connection thus encompasses not only sand and water, but also protected land and water areas. For those interested in nature, the view therefore extends from dry heathlands to damp marshes and open lakes. The natural features thus extend beyond the immediate beach; dry heaths and dry grasslands contrast with damp marshes, coastal meadows and lakes.

Natura 2000 site no. 154, “Sejerø Bay and Saltbæk Vig,” is located in or near coastal strategy route S1.06.02, where Tengslemark Lyng is located. Measures against invasive species and for heathland management are planned around Tengslemark Lyng. The spatial connection of the Natura 2000 site applies to the coastal strategy route, while the management projects are planned around Tengslemark Lyng.

Historical Traces in Tengslemark

Around 1370, Tengslemark appears as “Theslemarkæ,” and in 1481 as “Tengslæmarkæ.” The two spellings come from different centuries and visibly differ from each other. Around 1370 and 1481 are more than one hundred years apart. Those interested in culture can thus turn their attention to the place’s history of names, which provides its own historical perspective alongside the beach and nature.

The cooperative dairy Andelsmejeriet Søbjerg was named Tengslemark Mejeri and was founded in 1891. Tengslemark Mejeri was expanded in 1929. There are 38 years between its founding and expansion. Andelsmejeriet Søbjerg and Tengslemark Mejeri refer to the same cooperative dairy.

Tengslemark School was built in 1924 as a replacement for the old Sonnerup School. On 30 November 1963, the municipal council of Højby decided to close Tengslemark School. There are 39 years between the construction and the decision. The school’s history therefore includes both the replacement of the old Sonnerup School and the subsequent decision by the municipal council of Højby.
