Kirke Hyllinge: Church History and Walking Trail

Kirke Hyllinge can be understood through distinct contrasts: the beach “Solbakken Naturistcamping - beach” is located nearby, while the Kirke Hyllinge–Nørre Hyllinge walking trail is 3.5 km long. Kirke Hyllinge Church: Romanesque substance and tower from 1763

Kirke Hyllinge Church is a Romanesque village church with a tower added in 1763. Its Romanesque apse, Romanesque chancel and Romanesque nave are made of travertine. This combination makes the church interesting for visitors who want to examine architectural history in a specific building and are not solely interested in monumental architecture. When viewing the church, the focus extends from the masonry to the furnishings; the church brings these details together in a single structure.

Murals, vaults and a 17th-century altarpiece

The interior furnishings also lead through several historical layers. Romanesque frescoes are visible in the chancel arch of Kirke Hyllinge Church; they were presumably created around 1125 by the so-called “Byzantine-inspired workshop”. The Gothic vault paintings are attributed to the Isefjord Master. In addition, there is an intricately designed, cartilage-Baroque altarpiece from the 17th century. Egholm between manor house and museum

Egholm is one of Denmark’s oldest manor houses and was built in the Middle Ages. Egholm Castle is surrounded by a small woodland and is located near marshland and meadow. The Egholm Museum displays historical weapons, uniforms, vehicles and artefacts from the 17th century through the Second World War across more than 1,500 m². All exhibitions have audio guides. The loop route, with the same starting and finishing point, makes orientation easier when planning your day. At the same time, its fixed length provides a clear framework for the scope of the outing. If you would like to divide your days between culture and physical activity, you can plan the route as a standalone section. The route’s name mentions Kirke Hyllinge and Nørre Hyllinge; the address also specifies where the route begins and ends. For day planning, the fixed length and the return to the same starting point can be taken into account together. The return journey is already included in the loop route and does not need to be calculated as an additional section.
