Gershøj on Roskilde Fjord: Beach, Nature and Village Church

On the western shore of Roskilde Fjord lies Gershøj Harbour in the small fjord town of Gershøj. Roskilde Fjord is designated as an international nature conservation area within the Natura 2000 network. This gives you a coastal destination where the beach, nature, hiking, canoeing and historic church architecture can be explored as distinct highlights. Options range from spending time by the water to taking a longer hike, enjoying canoeing experiences and discovering the architectural details of Gershøj Church. For planning your day, there are several different points of reference: the harbour and beach by the fjord, field and forest paths along the Caminoen, and the church’s architectural forms and tiles.

Fjord Setting and Beach

Gershøj Harbour has a small, child-friendly sandy beach. Toilet and bathing facilities are located directly next to the beach. Gershøj Harbour and Beach also have a car park and a bus stop. This combination brings swimming and arrival together in the harbour area and makes the harbour a clear point of reference when planning your day by the water.

Hiking and Canoes

The Sæby-Gershøj Caminoen offers a different kind of coastal experience. It is a traditional nature hike of approximately 9 km, runs mainly along field and forest paths and is not suitable for pushchairs. It includes an introductory service at Sæby Church. For your planning, both the approximate length and the condition of the route are therefore important: the Caminoen is a nature-focused hike shaped by field and forest paths as well as the service in Sæby. Anyone travelling with a pushchair must take the route’s restriction into account when choosing a day for the hike.

In Skjoldungernes Land National Park, six canoes are available to borrow free of charge during the summer season; some of them are located at Gershøj Beach. A canoe from the national park can be borrowed in Møllekrogen and left in Gershøj. South of the town lies Gershøj Reef. It is considered a good fishing spot for shore fishing for sea trout. Canoes and the fishing spot expand the possibilities by the fjord with two clearly distinct activities on the water.

Church and Historic Details

Gershøj Church is a Romanesque village church with a Romanesque chancel and nave. It was later remodelled several times, particularly in the Late Middle Ages; during the Gothic period, a porch, a western extension of the nave and a tower were added on the south side of the nave. In the floor around the baptismal font are medieval glazed tiles with recessed ornamentation in red, reddish-brown and green glaze. The building phases and the colourful tiles draw attention to the development of a specific ecclesiastical building and complement Gershøj’s nature and water themes with a tangible historical accent. In the church interior, Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements are therefore part of the overall impression, along with glazed tiles in the floor area.
