Culture and history

The parish church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Żukowo is Gothic and was consecrated on April 7, 1946. It has an altar, a pulpit, and organs dating from around 1700.

Żukowo originated around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries; the first mention of the place dates from 1363. Heinrich von Podewils was born here; he was finance minister at the courts of Frederick William I and Frederick the Great of Prussia.

Places of remembrance

The lapidarium in Żukowo contains several gravestones of former residents. It also includes a memorial plaque mounted on a granite boulder commemorating the Polish and German deceased of the former German parish of Żukowo who found their final resting place in this cemetery. The plaque bears the years 1945–1995.

A chapel was built in the 1930s at the new Protestant cemetery in Żukowo, about 50 meters west of the church.

Nature and surroundings

The lime tree avenue in Żukowo is one of the natural monuments of the “Jezioro Łętowskie oraz okolice Kępic” landscape protection area.

In the vicinity of Żukowo is “krag zamek,” a geographical attraction considered to be a castle. In the wider regional area are “Święta Góra,” a geographical landscape feature considered to be a mountain, and “Czarcia Góra,” also a geographical landscape feature considered to be a mountain. “Darłowo - Gotycki zamek XIVw.,” a geographical attraction considered to be a castle, is also located there.

Cycle path

The Sławieński Szlak Rowerowy runs through Żukowo along the route from Pomiłowo via Gwiazdowo and Żukowo, continuing via Janiewice to Łętowo. In total, the cycle path covers approximately 25 km on roads, forest tracks, paths, and routes suitable for cyclists.
