Giżycko lies in the central part of the Masurian Lake District, within the region of the Great Masurian Lakes and the ethnographic region of Masuria.

History

The history of Giżycko includes a heritage of the Teutonic Order. A fortified settlement was built between Lakes Niegocin and Kisajno around 1340; part of the castle has been preserved. The town was granted city rights in 1612 and took the name Lötzen from the castle.

Water and Culture

Giżycko is considered one of the main ports on the sailing route of the Great Masurian Lakes and a Polish sailing center.
