Marstrand: Island, Fortress and Coastal Trails

Marstrand combines a car-free island, historic fortress culture and trails through a protected coastal landscape. Another hiking route on Marstrandsön leads to Skallen Lighthouse, from where the Kattegat and Skagerrak meet. Fortress, Art and History

Carlsten’s Fortress can be visited independently or as part of a guided tour. This choice changes the form of the visit without requiring you to commit to a single tour format. Strandverket presents contemporary art in an old 18th-century fortress on Marstrand. During every season from the end of March to the end of September, Strandverket offers a varied exhibition programme. The two offerings have different focuses: at Carlsten’s Fortress, visiting the fortress is the main focus, while at Strandverket, the focus is on contemporary art in a historic fortress building.

The town’s history can also be read in its townscape. Marstrand was a free port from 1775 to 1794. The townscape also preserves the strong influence of its era as a bathing resort. Those who would like to combine historic townscapes and cultural visits with nature trails will therefore find several clearly distinct themes here, without having to combine them into a single attraction.

Kayaks as a Distinct Connection to the Water

Marstrandskajaker has been manufacturing, selling and renting kayaks since 1979. In addition to hiking, the fortress and art, a specific connection to kayaking is therefore also part of the documented range of activities in Marstrand. This aspect complements the trails on Marstrandsön with an activity on the water and can play a distinct role when selecting your travel themes.
