Between granite coast and historic townscape

Lysekil combines a distinctive coastal landscape with maritime history and various ways to explore the town on foot or through themed experiences. An important decision for your stay is therefore whether you want to focus on the rocks and the western cliff coast, the history of fishing, or the special features of the West Sea.

Stångehuvud: Coastal trail, rocks and sea

The Lysekil–Skal section of the Kuststigen begins in the center of Lysekil, passes Havets Hus and reaches the Stångehuvud Nature Reserve. The route thus connects the town center with a specific natural experience, so you do not have to choose between a visit to the town and the coastal landscape as separate destinations. Stångehuvud is the southernmost extension of the Bohuslän granite region. Rounded, polished rock surfaces and clearly visible glacial striations define the character of this section.

In Stångehuvud, paths lead through narrow rock crevices and past cave-like rock formations. In Stångehuvud, narrow rock crevices are just as much a part of the landscape as the western cliff coast. The western cliff coast also offers good opportunities for swimming and recreational fishing. This means that the natural area can be experienced according to your interests in the geology, on a walk or through activities on the water.

Havets Hus and the World of the West Sea

The seal safari starts at the Havets Hus jetty. Havets Hus also offers a 60-minute guided tour of the entire complex; tours can be booked in advance.

Outside Havets Hus, Adventure Mini Golf depicts life in the West Sea as well as in the Kattegat and Skagerrak. The offering combines recreational mini golf with information and a quiz about the West Sea. This means that the maritime theme is presented not only through the coastal landscape, but also in a playful format.

Fishing, Seaside Resort and Protected Neighborhoods

The Vikarvet Museum presents the history of the stone and canning industries, fishing and the seaside resort. The grounds feature furnished fishermen’s cottages and boathouses from the early 19th century, as well as the fishing boat Frifararen. Vikarvet thus connects Lysekil’s economic development with preserved buildings and a specific historic boat.

Gamlestan is Lysekil’s original district and comprises several well-preserved, charming neighborhoods that are suitable for walking. Gamlestan is also one of the protected built-up areas. For a structured tour of the town, the Lysekils stadspromenader program includes four signposted routes ranging from 2 to 5.5 km. Another town walk leads from Rosvikstorg through Kungsgatan, Gamlestan, Norra Hamnen and Ålevik.

Insights into Coastal Culture

The tour by Lysekils Ostron & Musslor starts in Norra Hamnen in Lysekil and shows how mussels are farmed and harvested. It complements the historical and landscape impressions with an insight into the use of the sea.
