Karlsborg: Fortress, Göta Canal and Lake Vättern

Karlsborg Fortress was built between 1819 and 1909 and was the largest fortress in Europe. It is open to visitors around the clock. Vanäs Udde, also known as the Vanäs Peninsula, is located in Lake Vättern; Karlsborg Fortress is situated there. The Göta Canal runs between Lake Vänern and the Baltic Sea via Lake Vättern through the landscape, and canal boats travel along it through Karlsborg.

Culture

The Karlsborgs Fästningsmuseum is located on both sides of the impressive church vault in the 678-metre-long final rampart of Karlsborg Fortress. Covering more than 2,200 m², it includes exhibitions, stories and artefacts. Historical adventure tours, guided town tours and guided tours of the ramparts are offered at the fortress.

Mission Rooms is also located at Karlsborg Fortress. The group adventure combines suspense, problem-solving and military precision; the missions are based on real events and people. The route on Vanäs Udde passes historic buildings. The short Kanalholmen Runt circular trail leads around Kanalholmen along the Göta Canal and marks historically interesting places with signs. It begins at Kindboms Magasin, an 18th-century building that now houses the Idas Brygga restaurant.

In the vicinity of Karlsborg, Forsviks Bruk is a living industrial museum. There, visitors can observe work in the boatyard, forge and mill. Also in the vicinity, the Forsviks sluss lock was built in 1813. With a drop of 3.5 metres, it is the oldest and highest single-chamber lock on the Göta Canal.

The municipality of Karlsborg provides maps for hiking, cycling, horse-riding and paddling routes. The approximately 175-kilometre-long Västra Vätterleden connects the Bergslagsleden with Småland, passes the Göta Canal and runs through forests parallel to the shore of Lake Vättern. The Ranger Trail on Vaberget is a challenging circular route with ascents and descents.

In Karlsborg, visitors can explore nature by canoe or kayak; several canoe hire companies and suitable paddling sites are listed for this purpose. The floating sauna in Karlsborgsviken offers views of Lake Vättern and direct access to swimming in the lake beside the historic fortress walls. In the municipality of Karlsborg, there are fishing waters in Lake Vättern, Lake Bottensjön and Tiveden.

Visitor information

The Rödesundsbron bridge in Karlsborg is opened for Göta Canal traffic and additionally by the Carlsborgs Segelsällskap sailing club. The Karlsborg Infocenter is located at Storgatan 65 and provides visitors with information and tips about the destination.
