Hunnebostrand: Coastal Trails, Stonecutting History and Nature
If you would like to combine coastal hikes with maritime history, Hunnebostrand offers several clearly distinct ways to do so: trails through the landscape, museums exploring the region’s past, and art that can also be discovered independently of any particular season. The Ramsvikslandet Nature Reserve lies to the west in the immediate vicinity and is also known as the “Realm of the Cliffs”. There, hiking trails lead through green coastal meadows and heathland to smooth, pink rock slabs.
Coastal Trails Between Nature and History
The Kuststigen section between Hunnebostrand and Sotekanalen begins at Gammelgården. There is a car park on Lökholmsvägen, and the Gamlegården bus stop is also located there. The section between Hunnebostrand and Sotekanalen/Ramsvik is also the fourth section of the Soteleden. Those who seek not only landscapes but also regional traces while hiking will find numerous prehistoric remains and evidence of the region’s great stonecutting era there.
The Ekoparksleden provides another point of orientation. Along this trail, information boards provide details about the area’s nature and culture. This means that different focuses are available for planning: Ramsvikslandet combines coastal meadows, heathland and rock slabs, while Kuststigen, Soteleden and Ekoparksleden link nature with history and culture.
Gammelgården and the Image Archive
Gammelgården provides a direct introduction to the area’s older history. The building that now houses the Gammelgården Museum was erected here in 1739. Gammelgården also has historic buildings from the 18th century. The museum holds more than 1,000 objects representing the inhabitants of Hunne(b)ostrand and their everyday lives over several centuries.
In addition, Hunnebostrand’s Image Archive contains more than 18,000 digitally searchable photographs from Hunnebostrand, Ulebergshamn (Ulebergshamn) and the surrounding area. The archive complements a museum visit with a visual approach to local and regional history, while also making the connection to Ulebergshamn visible.
Stonecutting as a Defining Cultural Heritage
The Stenhuggerimuseet focuses on the working lives of the stonecutters. It offers insights into their techniques, production processes, social conditions and the culture of this trade. On display are photographs from the stonecutting era, tools and an old stone cart. The museum also holds stonecutting courses. This makes it possible to explore the history not only through objects and images, but also through practical craftsmanship.
The local history also includes the Stenbryggan bathing spot, which is also known as Kärringbadet. It was later formed from the so-called “Hitlerstenen”. The names and their origins therefore constitute another specific chapter in local memory.
Art and Harbour
The existing works at Udden Sculpture Park can be experienced year-round. The park complements the museums and historic sites with an opportunity to engage with contemporary or site-specific art, without requiring travel during any particular period.
Hunnebostrand’s guest harbour provides a maritime point of orientation. It has showers, toilets, laundry facilities, a sauna, fresh water, electricity and fuel. Together with Hunnebostrand, described as an old fishing village whose origins date back to the 13th century, this creates a destination where the coastal landscape, harbour life and the history of stonecutting can be experienced in close connection with one another.
