Harbour town between granite and the stone industry

Ulebergshamn combines a striking coastal landscape with the history of a place shaped by the stone industry. The town lies on the southern shore of Strandhamnskilen, which stretches inland between the mountains Vindeklätten and Kranseberget. The landscape includes an archipelago of pink granite. Those looking for a harbour town with a clearly recognisable local history and coastal trails will find several different starting points here for exploring the area.

Ulebergshamn was developed at the end of the 19th century and is a typical stonecutter village. Its townscape includes small, self-built houses and usable gardens. Its origins are closely linked to the stone industry: Ulebergshamn was created entirely through this industry. The harbour also reflects this development. It consists of a stone-clad quay with several larger warehouses, a few smaller boathouses and an old mill.

Traces of working and local history

The former economic importance of stone processing can be seen at the now-disused loading harbour. Warehouses, piles of stone and a crane bear witness to the once-profitable stone processing industry. In the southern part of Ulebergshamn, there is also an area with information boards about the development of the town and the history of the stone industry. In addition to the harbour, explanatory information about the local past is therefore available.

Individual buildings and works of art add to this picture. House no. 40, known as “Kaptenshuset”, dates from the late 1890s. It has an ornately shaped glass veranda and a finely crafted stone staircase. A granite memorial stone in Ulebergshamn was created in 2000 by the artist Gösta Mattsson. Another unusual story is associated with a shipwreck: dendrochronological analysis suggests that the wreck examined in Ulebergshamn may date from the mid-16th century.

On foot and by mountain bike along the coast

The Kuststigen section runs by the sea through Ulebergshamn and then continues along the coast to Hästedalen. This makes it possible to view the landscape in relation to the town and the wider coastline. For another form of transport, there is the #H4-MTB route: it passes through Ulebergshamn, Hästedalen and Hunnebostrand before reaching its end. The two routes have different focuses, while the town centre and its history remain in view.

The Fyren Ljuset lighthouse in the harbour

One of the most prominent features in the harbour is the unmanned, octagonal iron lighthouse Fyren Ljuset. It was commissioned in 1936 on Skålholmen in the Väderö Archipelago off Fjällbacka and moved to the harbour of Ulebergshamn in 2011. Its history connects its present location with its former function and with the island world off Fjällbacka. Thus, in Ulebergshamn, coastal landscape, the stone industry, harbour architecture and maritime history come together within a closely connected thematic setting.
