Kungshamn – Coast, Hållö and Maritime Culture

Between the bathing area, coastal trail and maritime history

Kungshamn combines coastal experiences with historical traces and connections on the water. The TÃ¥ngen bathing area in Kungshamn includes rocky bathing spots and a sandy beach. There are also jetties with bathing ladders and an accessible ramp. Right in the town, TÃ¥ngenparken offers lawns, plantings, a playground and a converted stage.

For active days, the Kungshamn–Tullboden section of the Kuststigen is a useful reference point. Kungshamn bus station is about 800 metres from the starting point of this section. For further orientation, you can also visit Örn.

Churches, art and historic houses

Kungshamn’s history can be traced through several locations. After the population grew significantly during the herring period, the parish church in Askum became too small; in 1780, Kungshamn therefore received its first church. The first red-painted wooden church was named Gustav Adolphs Capell and stood in the old cemetery. Today, a memorial stone at the site commemorates this predecessor building. The present stone church, Kungshamns kyrka, was inaugurated in 1904 after the former wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1901. Chronologically, this development stretches from the first church in 1780 through the fire in 1901 to the inauguration of the present stone church in 1904.

The local art scene also has a long, documented tradition. Since 1957, Mollbrinks has presented art exhibitions in Kungshamn every summer. Tångenpirens Konst & Hantverk is also located in an authentic harbour setting on Fisketången. The gallery displays works by seven artists using various techniques. In addition, the Sotenäs Folkdansgille, founded in 1975, performs group and partner dances whose origins and roots lie in different geographical regions and periods.

Gerlegården is one of the few surviving merchant houses in Bohuslän dating from the 18th century. Together with the churches, the memorial stone and the exhibitions, it creates a historical connection to the town that extends beyond individual attractions.

By boat to Hållö or onwards to Smögen

The Hållöexpressen runs from Bäckevikstorget in the centre of Kungshamn to the island of Hållö. The M/S Missouri has room for 53 passengers. In summer, Zitabåtarna operates from the harbour in Kungshamn to Smögenbryggan approximately every half hour. The two boat connections therefore differ in their departure points: Hållö is connected to Bäckevikstorget in the centre, while Smögen is connected to the harbour and Smögenbryggan.

In addition, Zitabåtarna organises mackerel fishing in late summer and autumn. Taxi-boat operations in Kungshamn began in 1927; the company also offers tailor-made charter trips. Kungshamn thus brings together bathing areas, coastal hiking, local history, art, dance and various forms of maritime activities, without these offerings converging into a single type of excursion.
