Maritime history takes center stage in Dynekilen; at Hogdalsnäset, historical building and road history combine with a marked hiking loop. Specific destinations include Hogdals kyrka, Kungsvägen, Halle-Vagnaren Nature Reserve and the rock carving L1969:3521.

Hogdals kyrka on Hogdalsnäset

Hogdals kyrka is first mentioned in written records as early as 1391. The present church building was constructed in the Karl Johan style in 1856 and has a barrel-vaulted interior. The two years represent two different historical layers of the church building: 1391 refers to the early written record, while 1856 refers to the construction of the present building. The Karl Johan style refers to the architectural design, while the barrel vault describes the shape of the interior. A barrel vault is a longitudinally vaulted ceiling form. The church stands on Hogdalsnäset on a south-facing slope near a road junction. Steep rock formations surround the site and give the historic building a distinctly defined landscape setting.

Kungsvägen: historic road through forest and over hills

Kungsvägen dates back to the 17th century. Its historic route runs through the forest and over steep hills. From the parking area by the former Gästgiveri before Hogdals kyrka, the route initially crosses the old stone bridge. The former Gästgiveri refers to a former inn and marks the shared starting point of the two route options. The routes only separate after the stone bridge: one option follows the old Kungsvägen, while the other takes the scenic path along Dynekilen to the old E6 at Dyne camping. Both options therefore begin at the same parking area, but then differ in their route and in the landscape area described.

Halle-Vagnaren and the rock carving L1969:3521

At the far end of Hogdalsnäset lies Halle-Vagnaren Nature Reserve. There is a marked hiking loop that leads to a 120-meter-high summit and back to the reserve’s parking area. The loop complements the historic routes with a clearly marked route within the nature reserve.

The rock carving L1969:3521 also makes the landscape interesting from a cultural-historical perspective. It is located on a rough and partly weathered rock surface that slopes about 5 to 10 degrees to the southeast. The 8.7 × 4-meter surface depicts 30 ships, 31 human figures, 2 animal figures, 6 footprints, 2 ring figures, 9 fragments and 33 cup marks.

Dynekilen as a historic setting

The Dynekilen sea inlet is associated with an event from June 1716: A Swedish transport fleet was surprised there by the Danish-Norwegian captain Peter Tordenskjold. On Gedholmen in Dynekilen, a memorial stone commemorates the 1716 battle. The site of the historic event and the location of the memorial stone are thus clearly distinguished: the inlet represents the event, while Gedholmen represents its commemoration.
