The Kullemyren fen south of Flåghult is a specific natural feature; the Barackerna represent historic buildings constructed for the stone workers at Gilltunga. There is also a road route towards Krokstrand and a former orienteering camp. For your travel decision, nature, local orientation and history are therefore presented side by side: you can weigh up which of these different perspectives you want to shape your stay.

Wetlands and plants

Kullemyren is a 20-hectare fen south of Flåghult. Plants found there include snip, brunag and korallrot. “Fen” identifies a specific type of peatland and more precisely classifies the landscape; the area and plants add spatial and botanical detail to this description. For travellers who take nature into account when choosing a destination, this offers a clearly defined focus that goes beyond a general description of the landscape. Check in advance whether the fen is accessible.

Flåghult Öst was among the wetlands surveyed as part of a municipal wetland project by Strömstad Municipality from 2022 to 2025. The project is complete; this means that, alongside Kullemyren, there is another named wetland associated with a municipal survey.

The history of the Barackerna

The Barackerna, also known as Husebobarackerna, were built in 1929 by N S Beer for the stone workers at Gilltunga and demolished in 1946. Only the foundations remain visible. The Barackerna are just under 1 kilometre south of the quarry at Gilltunga. The construction year, demolition and surviving foundations make the sequence of the buildings’ history concrete.

Road directions towards Krokstrand

In Flåghult, the road forks on the way to Krokstrand. After the fork, Lake Flåghultstjärnet is on the left, while the road continues north towards Krokstrand. The lake and road serve different purposes: Flåghultstjärnet is the landmark to the side after the fork, while Krokstrand is the direction the road takes.

Terrain, maps and hiking plans

On the first weekend of June 2023, nine juniors and supervisors trained in the terrain and with the Flåghult-Håvedal map at an orienteering camp in Strömstad Municipality. For active travellers, combining map work with terrain offers a distinct perspective alongside the fen and its history.

There are some wind shelters along the Bohusleden sections in Strömstad Municipality, but they are far apart; camping is therefore recommended. Those including these sections in their itinerary can take the camping recommendation into account along with the long distances between shelters.

The dates answer different questions: the municipal project covered the years 2022 to 2025, while the orienteering camp took place on the first weekend of June 2023. This distinguishes a multi-year survey period from a training camp with a specific date.
