Paths between nature and history

The Northern Cycling Tour is an easy cycling route through varied nature and cultural landscapes in the northern part of Essunga Municipality. In Nossebro, Essungaleden begins, a 12-kilometre circular route via Furet and the sunken lanes back to Nossebro. The route can be completed entirely on foot. Cycling is possible on most of Essungaleden; the section between the sunken lanes and Essunga church village is excluded.

The disused railway line between Nossebro and Essunga station is also extensively used as a walking and cycling path. Hälsans Stig in Nossebro forms a five-kilometre loop, with each kilometre marked. At Högaberget there are walking loops of 0.7 kilometres, 2 kilometres and 2.5 kilometres, as well as a lit path; part of the Strandpromenaden route also runs there. On the other side of the suspension bridge by the large oak tree, there is a barbecue area that can be used.

Furet and the old sunken lanes

Furet is a 55-hectare woodland area. A section of the centuries-old Skara–Lödöse route has been preserved there. At the sunken lanes, a short walking loop passes through the historic landscape of paths. The sunken lanes are public spaces and accessible year-round. At the same time, they are registered as ancient monuments or archaeological monuments.

The barbecue area in Furet can be reached from Nossebro on foot or by bicycle via the old railway line. In the route sections mentioned, this connects the historic railway line with woodland, sunken lanes and a centuries-old route, without the individual routes having the same length or following the same course.

Churches with medieval traces

The present building of Kyrkås kyrka dates from the late 17th century. Kyrkås kyrka is regarded as a votive church; travellers and sick people from near and far donated gifts to the church in order to receive help in times of need. Fåglums kyrka is one of Sweden’s oldest churches and has origins in the early Middle Ages. Fåglums kyrka also contains a medieval image of the Madonna.

Bärebergs kyrka has medieval roots; a church and cemetery already existed there in the 13th century. The present Essunga kyrka was built in 1903–1905 in the Neoclassical style, with a tall, pointed tower. An old bell from the 15th century hangs in the belfry of Essunga kyrka, which dates from 1963. A church has stood on the site of Essunga kyrka since the Middle Ages.

Fåglum is also home to Väderkvarnen i Fåglum. It was built in 1885 and moved to its present location in 1892.

Culture and leisure in Nossebro

The cultural walk in Nossebro is easy and adapted for accessibility for bicycles, wheelchairs and pushchairs. Stationshuset i Nossebro conveys railway history through photographs and objects from the narrow-gauge railway era and shows how the stationmaster lived.

Biograf Stjärnan in Nossebro shows films and also offers live opera broadcasts. The cinema began operating in the 1920s and, despite its modern technology, retains its retro style and original ambience. Nossebro bad och camping has a heated outdoor pool with a water slide and an adjacent children’s pool.

Market and regional produce

The Nossebro Marknad takes place on the last Wednesday of every month. The market offers genuine handicrafts, regionally produced raw materials and carefully selected delicacies.
