In Nossebro, traces of cultural history meet the Nossan and trails on Högaberget. If you are considering the area as a travel destination, you can shape your stay around different interests: local history, the market, trails through mixed forest or activities on the water. This lets you decide during the planning stage which experiences you would like to focus on.

Cultural history in the townscape

The Cultural Walk in Nossebro uses signs at buildings, artworks and locations to share information, stories and images from different historical periods. The route opened in April 2009 and was updated in 2019 for its tenth anniversary. The signs give the walk a historical focus, rather than simply presenting individual sights side by side.

A distinctive landmark is the artwork “Blommande Nossan” by Tony Abrahamsson, dating from 1954. It is located in the water just below Kerstinsås kvarn. After restoration, the mill resumed grinding grain in 2007. The artwork and the mill’s history represent two different chapters at the same location: a work from the mid-20th century and the resumption of milling after the restoration.

Stallaholm also tells a story of the area’s past. The name once referred to both a village and a large farm; in the 17th century, the farm belonged to the noble Papegoja family. The collections on the upper floor of Stationshuset offer a different historical focus. They include holdings assembled by former postmaster Åke Bergmer on the VGJ and other narrow-gauge railways in Västergötland. Temporary exhibitions are held in the former waiting room.

Essunga Library, in the centre of Nossebro, is also part of the area’s cultural offering. It has books, newspapers, computers, learning opportunities and cultural activities; the visitor programme may change. Another cultural and historical highlight is the Retrolägenheten Andra Våningen: a unique three-room apartment furnished in the style of the 1960s. These examples differ in form, ranging from collections and exhibitions to an apartment furnished in a period style.

Trails, forest and the Nossan

At Högaberget, exercise trails and illuminated paths run through mixed forest. The elevation difference is about 15 metres. This gives visitors specific points of reference when considering trails and woodland surroundings during their stay. A barbecue area is on the other side of the suspension bridge, by the large oak. This location can also be identified using the landmarks mentioned.

The Lödöse–Skara Pilgrim Trail offers a different historical connection: one section passes through Nossebro and follows a medieval pilgrimage route. On the Nossan, the focus is on the water itself. Near Nossebro, the river is considered a natural setting for canoeing or kayaking. Canoes are rented at Nossebro bad & camping; check current options and availability before your trip. The Nossan is also rich in fish and is home to 19 fish species. Fish populations and regulations may change.

At Nosse Kvarn, a path leads through the cellar to a small island in the Nossan, below the beautiful stone bridge. Access may depend on opening arrangements. The water-based experiences therefore vary: paddling on the river, spending time on the small island or learning about the fish species each appeal to different interests.

Market day and swimming options

Nossebro Marknad takes place from March to November, on the last Wednesday of each month. If you would like to plan your stay around a market day, check the date in advance. The stalls offer locally produced and organic goods, including honey, juice and jam. The selection may vary from one market day to another.

Nossebro bad & camping has both a heated outdoor pool and an indoor pool. The outdoor pool is 25 metres long and has a water slide and an adjoining children’s pool; its seasonal operating schedule may vary. The indoor pool is 12.5 metres long and has an adjustable-depth floor. The details on length and facilities help distinguish the two pools. Check the outdoor pool’s current operating conditions before visiting.

Nossebro can thus be explored through several specific themes: historic sites and collections, the monthly market rhythm, trails on Högaberget or activities on the Nossan. Which of these shapes your stay depends on whether you want to focus on cultural history, exercise, market life or the water.
