Ã…nge: Nature, Culture and Hiking Trails in Medelpad

Ånge can be explored through specific natural, hiking and cultural attractions. Haverö strömmar is located at the outlet of the Ljungan from Kyrksjön, where the river divides into three streams. The freely flowing water has high biological conservation value, as this habitat is now rare.

Ånge includes the localities of Fränsta, Erikslund, Torpshammar, Alby, Tälje, Gösunda, Östavall and Ånge.

Nature

The Haverö strömmar nature reserve has trails and several rest areas. The northern rest area at Kvarnströmmen and the southernmost one at Strömnäset are also accessible with a stroller or walker. The same nature reserve is home to a restored fishing hut from the early 20th century.

Rankleven is designated as a nature reserve and Natura 2000 site. Snödskallegrottan is a 57-metre-long cave formation with a fairly steep entrance. A stair-like formation leads to Kerstins sal, from which several short side passages branch off.

Naturum Ã…nge offers an exhibition as well as activities and guided excursions throughout the year.

Hiking and Winter

Rankleven can be climbed via two trails that are each less than two kilometres long. The ascent is steep and rocky, and the summit offers an impressive view over the Ljungan Valley. Rankleven can be reached by bus to the Södra Sillre stop; from there, it is 600 metres along the road to the start of the mountain trail.

The St. Olav's Trail runs from Selånger in the east to Trondheim in the west, is approximately 580 kilometres long in total and can also be explored in shorter stages. The trail on the northern side of Vikbron is part of this long-distance hiking route.

A very beautiful hiking trail leads to Gösundaberget; the ascent takes about 45 minutes. Gösundaberget also has a rest cabin and a wind shelter.

The ski slope at Getberget reaches an elevation of 348 metres above sea level at its upper end. It has a vertical drop of 140 metres and a length of 510 metres, and is equipped with two lifts.

Culture and History

Vikbron in Fränsta is Sweden's longest wooden bridge of its kind and spans the Ljungan for 133 metres. The log-driving station at Eldnäset was established in the 19th century by Ljunga Elfs Flottningsbolag and used until 1968, when log driving on the Ljungan was discontinued.

The Eldnäset Log Driving Museum displays documentation, old photographs and equipment from the log-driving industry. There is also an auditorium where old films from Haverö and a picture presentation are shown.

The Gösta Sundin Handicrafts Museum in Västanå (Borgsjö) is run by his sons Ronny and Roger and displays detailed models of the former smallholder society. The collection comprises more than 300 groups containing over 10,000 objects.

Fiskehuset in Alby is located in Alderströmmen. It was built in the 1870s and served until the mid-1960s for catching trout, salmon, grayling and eels.

Boda Borg Torpshammar is an indoor adventure experience where groups complete 22 unique quests with different themes and environments. The quests combine problem-solving, teamwork and various levels of physical activity.

The buildings at Gammelbodarna are well preserved, giving the area high overall value.

Geography

Flataklocken was designated Sweden's geographical centre in 1947 based on a calculation by KTH in Stockholm of the centre of gravity of Sweden's landmass. Flataklocken offers a 360-degree view over the Medelpad landscape. An accessible gravel path leads uphill to the restaurant.

Visitor Information

Ånge's tourist office is located at the Borgsjö rest area along the E14. The land and buildings at Gammelbodarna are private; visitors are asked to bear this in mind when visiting.

Vikbron is currently being restored and therefore cannot be accessed; it is scheduled to reopen in summer 2027.
