Alby lies by Aldern Lake; the local landscape also includes the Albyforsen rapids, also known as Svarveln, and a small swimming spot in the village. Albyforsen has a drop of 23.5 metres. The lake, rapids and swimming spot are distinct water features that characterise Alby as a travel destination.

Lake, rapids and trails

A municipal route description from 2021 describes a path along Albyforsen that follows the rapids downstream through a spruce forest. It leads to a viewpoint overlooking the rapids, just before the power line clearing. If you are interested in this landscape, the route combines a wooded stretch of trail with a clearly located viewpoint. The drop offers a different kind of orientation: it describes the rapids as a geographical feature, while the route description focuses on the path through the forest and to the viewpoint.

For the Alby promenadslinga, the nearest bus stop is Alby Centralgatan. A parking area for the route is located by the dam on Industrigatan. It must not be used in a way that prevents work vehicles from accessing the dam. For orientation, both a specific bus stop name and the location of the parking area are provided; when parking, access for work vehicles must be taken into account.

Industry and local history

Alby is a period town with stories from the early railway era; its history is connected to the industrialisation of Västernorrland. In 1898, a power station was built at the Albyforsen rapids for the electrochemical industry company Alby Calcium-Carbid AB. Alongside its natural features, Alby therefore has a specific industrial landmark associated with a year and a company name. The railway stories and regional industrialisation also offer broader historical perspectives. If you look beyond Alby’s lake and trails, you can also include this connection between local history, technology and regional industry in your travel plans.

Cemetery and fishing history

The cemetery at Alby gravkapell was established as early as the 1910s. Alby gravkapell was built as a burial chapel and designed by Nils FĂĽrst in 1933. These are two distinct historical details: the earlier establishment of the cemetery and the later design of the chapel. The sequence helps distinguish the history of the building from the establishment of the cemetery.

Another historical landmark is the Fiskehuset in Alby, which is located in Alderströmmen. A fish house dating from the mid-18th century previously stood on the same site as the Fiskehuset. Trout, salmon, grayling and eels were caught at the Fiskehuset until the mid-1960s. The location, the fish species mentioned and the former use give this topic a distinct character. The two dates refer to different things: the mid-18th century refers to the predecessor building, while the mid-1960s marks the end of the fishing period.

When planning your trip, consider what you want to focus on: the water and the route, or Albyforsen’s industrial history, the railway era and the area’s other historical topics?
