Enköping – Historic Trails, Museums and Water

The Cykelleden Uppland cycle trail runs for 80 kilometres through the Lake Mälaren landscape between Enköping and Bålsta via Örsundsbro.

The selection of places includes Enköping, Lillkyrka, Fjärdhundra, Grillby, Örsundsbro, Ekolsund and Edsta.

Trails, Water and Nature

The mountain bike trail in Gånsta is marked blue, is four kilometres long and begins at the obstacle course in Gånsta. Åpromenaden is an approximately two-kilometre route to public works of art that can be visited year-round, around the clock and in any weather. At a leisurely pace with short stops at the artworks, the art walk takes around 50 to 60 minutes; it begins and ends in Drömparken.

In the immediate vicinity of Enköping, Haga ekbackar can be reached by bicycle and offers lake views, oak groves and hazel groves. Nearby, five kilometres south of Enköping city centre, Bredsandsbadet offers a long sandy beach, a diving tower, jetties, a beach volleyball court and a kiosk. From Bredsand, kayak or canoe launches provide access to Lake Mälaren and the islands of Skarpan and Gröneborg.

Vattenparken near Korsängen is a natural area that combines recreation with the purification of large parts of Enköping’s rainwater and serves as a habitat for birds.

Family Experiences and Events

Pepparrotsbadet offers family experiences with lagoons, water currents, an infinity pool and a diving tower. It also has a water slide over 100 metres long, a climbing wall and a children’s area with a Viking ship, rune stone and treasure hunt.

Trädgårdsdagen takes place in the parks and centre of Enköping on the first Saturday of September every year. Admission is free; the programme combines activities for all age groups with the themes of gardening, health, food and crafts. Trädgårdsdagen includes activities, markets, lectures, exhibitors and workshops.

Culture and History

Enköping offers a historical city walk for independently exploring selected historic sites in the city. An archaeological excavation uncovered a paved road that has already been dated to the beginning of the 11th century.

Vårfrukyrkan on Kyrkåsen was built from the 12th century onwards and served at that time as a church for a larger area. Below Kyrkåsen lies the ruin of St Ilians kyrka, which was built at the end of the 13th century.

Enköpings museum is located in the former town hall, which was built as early as 1783. The museum presents the cultural history of the municipality from the Stone Age to almost the present day and, in addition to permanent exhibitions, also shows changing exhibitions on various topics.

Westerlundska gården is a museum in the former home and former practice of Dr Westerlund. The Bahco Museum traces the journey from the local innovation of J.P. Johansson’s adjustable wrench to global success. Machines, films and objects from the company’s industrial history are displayed, including a spring hammer machine, lathes, special-purpose machines and objects from the industrial works fire brigade.

Getting There and the Harbour

Enköping railway station is located at Enköpings resecentrum. At the station, there are bus connections to Västerås on route 874 and to Uppsala on routes 774 and 804. The train journey from Stockholm Central Station to Enköping takes approximately 40 minutes.

Enköping can be reached by boat via Lake Mälaren; several harbours have visitor berths. At Enköping harbour there are red-painted grain warehouses dating from the late 18th century. Next to them, there is a guest harbour with ten berths as well as parking spaces for motorhomes.
