Täby Among Church Art, Runestones and Nature Trails

In Täby stands Täby Church, whose Stiglucken and bell tower are protected ecclesiastical cultural monuments and are covered by Chapter 4 of the Swedish Heritage Conservation Act. The church dates from the mid-13th century. The west vault contains the best-known motif of the Täby paintings, the „Chess Game of Death“.

Culture and History

The local history museum of Täby in Rönninge by provides an impression of earlier life and everyday life in Täby. Among other things, visitors can see a small classroom, a kitchen, a tailor's workshop, a shoemaker's workshop and a carpenter's workshop. The museum is housed in a former storage building from the 19th century.

Karby Gård is an art and cultural centre. Several art exhibitions are held in its main building every year; it also has a printmaking workshop and a café serving pastries and light meals.

Rönninge by has been restored as a publicly accessible demonstration farm. In the car-free surroundings, visitors can experience older ways of life and traditions from before the modernisation of agriculture after the Second World War.

The permanent exhibition „Täby's history – from ancient times to the present“ in Täby's main library presents the local cultural heritage and encourages visitors to explore places of cultural-historical significance in the municipality.

In Runriket around Lake Vallentunasjön, runestones and runic inscriptions can be discovered at nine different sites. Runriket also includes an open-air exhibition, an adventure park and a reconstruction of the Viking Age monument Jarlabankes bro. This structure is a 150-metre-long and 6.5-metre-wide causeway that was probably built in the 1050s; two stones with runic inscriptions stand at its northern end.

From Jarlabankes bro, you can go around the lake and then continue by bicycle, car or bus into Runriket.

Nature and Landscape

The Skavlöten recreational area is located in the Rönninge by–Skavlöten nature reserve at the northern end of Lake Rönningesjön. There is a bathing area with a beach and bathing jetties. The exercise trail system comprises illuminated routes of 1.25, 2.5 and 5 kilometres starting from the recreation centre, as well as a 10-kilometre route.

Rönninge by lies in a small-scale, cultivated valley east of Lake Rönningesjön. Landforms characteristic of a rift valley landscape shape the area and make it topographically varied.

Sjöslingan is an approximately six-kilometre-long circular trail marked in blue. It passes wetlands and a Natura 2000 site and runs alongside a prepared rest area at Käringsjön.

Towards Lake Ullnasjön, a system of footbridges runs through wetlands, allowing visitors to walk without getting their feet wet. At regular intervals, small footbridge areas with seating and signs are located along the route; their haiku by Tomas Tranströmer convey the character of the surroundings.

Trails and Exercise

The approximately three-kilometre-long Stolpaleden trail leads through the natural and cultural history of Stolpaskogen; 14 information boards stand along the route.

Along this trail are traces of human activity from the Bronze Age to the present day, as well as a Viking Age burial ground.

The Ensta krog recreation centre is directly adjacent to Stolpaskogen and offers walking and exercise trails, fire pits, a wind shelter, a playground and an outdoor gym.

When the ice is sufficiently thick, an approximately five-kilometre-long ice-skating track is prepared on Lake Rönningesjön.
