Enhörna on Lake Mälaren: Churches, Trails and Culture

Enhörna, also known as Enhörnalandet, is a peninsula in Lake Mälaren northwest of the urban area of Södertälje. Locally, Enhörna is also known as Körsbärslandet.

The immediate locality also includes Vitsand and Enhörna.

Landscape

The location on Lake Mälaren brings together a variety of landscape features in Enhörna. Överenhörna kyrka stands on a hill surrounded by farmland, forest and water. In summer, steamboats dock at the jetties in Sandviken and Ekensberg on their way to Stockholm, Mariefred and Birka.

Culture

The Enhörna Hembygdsmuseum consists of Småskolan, Storskolan, Skolgården and Husaby. All areas of the museum have been adapted so that people with mobility impairments can view the exhibitions and use the toilets. The museum also has a playground in the schoolyard. In Småskolan, it offers coffee, juice and bread.

Ytterenhörna kyrka has origins dating back to the 12th century, and a rune stone stands in front of the church. At the entrance to the churchyard are two carved stone slabs with rock carvings known as Tunahällarna. Överenhörna kyrka was built around the year 1200 and was originally a manorial church of the royal estate Husby, now called Ekensbergs säteri.

The excavation site at Husby backe can be visited. Trails lead around the area, while information boards explain the various excavation sites. Excavations at Husby backe uncovered a glass-fused bead and post holes indicating a predecessor to the Husby estate dating back at least to the Viking Age. Finds from the investigations at Husaby Enhörna date from the Viking Age, approximately 800 to 1050 AD, through to the year 1650.

Getting around

Bus route 787 serves the area around the Enhörna Hembygdsmuseum; the Överenhörna kyrka stop is about 75 metres from the museum. According to the timetable, bus routes 787 and 787X operate regular services from Södertälje Centrum to Enhörna.

The Täljeleden hiking trail runs as far as Enhörnalandet. In Sundsvik in Enhörna, a 3-kilometre connecting trail follows a gravel road to the Täljeleden. The Täljeleden is marked with yellow signs and runs mostly along hilly forest paths.

Seasons

Underåsbadet Enhörna is a lakeside bathing area on Lake Mälaren with lawns and a volleyball court. The bathing area at Gillberga has a ramp onto the jetty as well as a ramp from the beach into the water.

In winter, the Enhörna friluftsgård grounds have cross-country ski tracks. These include a 3-kilometre illuminated track and a shorter illuminated track. The same grounds also have a small sledding hill for younger children.

Local area

The old barn at Norrlöt Antik & Loppis contains antiques and curiosities, furniture, porcelain, decorative items and textiles. Café Stallet serves open-faced sandwiches, sausages with bread, pancakes, as well as homemade pastries, cakes and biscuits.

Plants can be bought at Norrlöts Handelsträdgård. At Café Stallet at Norrlöts Handelsträdgård, you can enjoy fika while children ride pedal vehicles in one of the large greenhouses.
