Södertälje lies where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea.

Nature and trails

The municipality combines coastal landscapes, wetlands and protected nature with trails through a variety of landscape areas. The Sörmlandsleden runs along two parallel routes through Södertälje: the northern route leads between Grödinge and Gnesta, while the southern route follows the municipality’s eastern boundary via Mörkö.

Along the coast, the Kustleden passes through varied landscapes with open forests, shore meadows shaped by grazing, rocky areas and viewpoints overlooking the fjärds. Another natural site is Lina lersjö, a restored bird lake. It provides a habitat for amphibians, including larger and smaller newts, as well as many species of dragonflies.

There are 24 nature reserves in Södertälje. The grounds of Tullgarn Palace include a formal 18th-century garden and a picturesque English park. They also feature ponds, bridges and a bay lined with shallow beaches and home to a rich variety of birdlife.

Around Farstanäs, there are several fishing spots where you can fish year-round without a fishing licence.

Culture and history

The Torekällberget open-air museum in central Södertälje uses historic houses and farmsteads to show what life in Sörmland was like in the 19th century. The museum also includes reconstructed gardens with period-typical plants; the enclosures are home to animals of traditional Swedish land breeds.

The outdoor area of Tom Tits Experiment offers, among other things, cycling on a high-wire course, gold panning, a plant maze and various water experiments.

Wendela Hebbes hus was the summer residence of journalist and writer Wendela Hebbe from 1863 to 1888. The museum tells the story of Wendela Hebbe and her daughter Signe Hebbe, who are credited with important pioneering achievements in Swedish cultural life.

Kulturhuset i Ytterjärna is a cultural centre with a diverse programme and a concert hall. Oaxen is also home to a preserved lime kiln, which is one of the listed buildings in Södertälje Municipality.

The city and the canal

Kanalmuseet is a signposted walking route along the western side of the Södertälje Canal. From the lock via Wendela Hebbes hus to Gamla Flickskolan, nine information boards use text and images to explain features and surroundings along the canal.

Marcus Wallenberg Hall is privately owned but open to the public. Its exhibitions focus on Scania and the company’s vision for sustainable transport, connectivity and the environment.

Getting there and information

Bus 751 runs from the bus stop at the commuter railway station up to Torekällberget. The tourist information office in Södertälje Municipality provides maps, brochures and event tickets.

The municipal structure comprises the localities of Järna, Södertälje, Hölö and Mölnbo.
