Discover Djursholm: Castle, Nature and Waterfront

Djursholm combines a distinctive cultural landscape with peaceful natural areas and places by the water. If you want to choose between historic buildings, woodland paths, waterfront views and active trails during your stay, the area offers several clearly distinct focal points. The choice can be guided by the specific landscapes and sights: Altorpskogen represents woodland and training loops, Djursholms slott and the chapel represent history, while Samsöparken and Germaniaparken make the connection with the water visible.

Woodland and trails in Altorpskogen

Altorpskogen is a large coniferous woodland area that has largely been preserved in an almost untouched state. This creates the impression of a deep forest, even though the area is criss-crossed by paths and training trails. Small deciduous-woodland marshes lie along these paths and training trails, adding another clearly recognisable facet to the character of the woodland. Four training loops are also documented to help with orientation on site. Those who see nature not merely as a backdrop but as a central focus of their stay will find a different emphasis here than in the historic grounds and along the waterfront promenade.

The history of mobility can also be seen in the townscape. The former route of Djursholmsbanan is visible in Djursholm through walking and cycling paths as well as preserved railway crossings. Thus, today’s paths and visible traces of a former railway line belong together, without any specific route or journey time being inferred from this.

Castle, park and chapel

Djursholms slott acquired its present appearance in the 17th century through Svante Gustavsson Banér. Djursholms slottspark reaches further back in time: its origins lie in the 16th century, when the castle was built. Today, the park can be explored via several walking paths with benches placed along them. The park paths and seating areas make the castle grounds recognisable as a distinct landscape, while the building’s history forms the historic focus of the area.

Djursholms slott can be rented for various events, including weddings, Christmas parties, birthday celebrations, conferences, kick-off events and dissertation dinners. This use adds a documented event function to the building’s historical significance, but says nothing about general access or an ongoing programme of events.

Another prominent building is Djursholms Kapell. The chapel was built in the Art Nouveau style in 1898 and constructed as a wooden basilica on a high granite plinth. It therefore creates an architectural contrast with the castle and park.

Waterfront views and water activities

Germaniaparken has a cliffside bathing area with a bathing ladder installed year-round. In summer, a diving board is also available there.

Samsöparken is part of the waterfront promenade through its outlet into Samsöviken and the new quay promenade. From there, views extend across Samsöviken. This area has a different emphasis from Altorpskogen: instead of woodland paths, the setting is defined by its connection with the water, the quay promenade and views across the bay.
