Skærup: History, Landscape and Excursion Destinations
Skærup between Landscape, History and Excursion Destinations
If, during your stay on the Baltic Sea, you are looking for more than just a beach, as well as landscape, history and a varied excursion, Skærup offers several different points of interest. The area combines a route through Skærup Ådal with historical sites and Skærup Zoo. The beaches Brejning Beach and Hvidbjerg Strand are also located nearby. When choosing your accommodation in Skærup, you can therefore decide whether nature, cultural history or a family outing should be the main focus.
Skærup Ådal: Wet Meadows, Slopes and Hills
The Skærup Å route leads through Skærup Ådal. Along the way, wet meadows, appealing landscapes and flat areas close to the banks shape the scenery. There are also slopes and hills, so the landscape does not remain flat throughout. These varied features make the route a practical option for anyone who wants to get around on foot during their stay in Skærup and experience a diverse setting. The description of the route primarily provides an overview of its landscape character, not of a specific length or walking time.
The Bronze Age and Church History
At Gravhøjene ved Skærup, there is a 3,400-year-old Bronze Age burial mound on top of an older Stone Age mound. Another special feature of the site is that a staircase leads from the Skærup Øst rest area to this burial mound. However, the area's historical significance extends beyond its prehistoric traces. Skærup is first mentioned in 1325 under the name “Skyepthorp”. In 1688, Skærup was a medium-sized village with 16 farms and 4 houses.
Skærup Kirke also adds to this picture. The church is originally Romanesque, while its tower dates from the Late Gothic period, approximately between 1400 and 1550. Those interested in the development of rural communities and historic buildings will therefore find several chronological layers here: from a Stone Age mound and a Bronze Age burial mound to written local history and medieval church architecture.
Skærup Zoo for a Varied Excursion
Skærup Zoo presents another side of Skærup. It is home to more than 100 different animal species. Visitors may feed the sheep and goats with special food available at the kiosk. In addition, pony rides are offered at Skærup Zoo every weekend, during school holidays and on public holidays. These specific offerings make the zoo an independent excursion destination among the area's attractions, particularly if you would like to include an animal-related activity alongside landscape and history.
Beaches Nearby and Further Orientation
