Rødekro: Hærvejen, Mill Culture and Nature

In the centre of Rødekro lies Hærvejsparken, a green meeting place. There, the cultural history of the Rødåen and the history of Rødekro’s origins are presented. This brings nature and local history together in a central location.

Nature and Fishing

Put-and-take fishing is possible at Rødekro Fiskepark. The fishing park is located in a beautiful natural area covering 60 hectares and comprises a total of five large lakes. Lakes 1, 2 and 3 are used for fishing every day. Rainbow trout are stocked mainly; you can also catch brown trout, brook trout, pike-perch, pike and eels there.

Bakkegården Put & Take also focuses on the water: its two fishing lakes cover a combined total area of 56,000 m². Lerskov Plantage Hundeskov is a fenced dog exercise forest and has a separate fenced area for puppies and small dogs. There is a car park on Tingvej; further access points are located in the northern and southern parts. For planning routes with a dog, the car park on Tingvej and the two access sides can serve as points of reference.

Trails and Train Connections

Between Vojens and Rødekro, Hærvejen includes a 31.1 km hiking stage and a 27.1 km Radelappen cycling stage. The different route lengths help you plan hiking and cycling separately. The hiking stage is 4.0 km longer than the Radelappen cycling stage. For travel by train, InterCity, InterCityLyn and regional trains stop at Rødekro station.

Aabenraabanen is a 6.3 km railway line between Aabenraa and Rødekro. In 2024, it was designated a protected archaeological monument; parts of the line are now used for rail cycling. Rail cycling refers to parts of the line, not the entire 6.3 km railway.

Mill, Sculpture and Local History

Damgaard Mølle was built in 1867 and is one of Denmark’s best-preserved buckwheat mills. Its machinery is still functional. Every year on the third Sunday in June, the mill hosts Mill Days. Outside its usual opening hours, it can be visited by appointment by calling 74 66 41 80. Built in 1867, the mill dates from the second half of the 19th century. The third Sunday in June and visits by appointment outside the usual opening hours mark two different times associated with the mill.

The public sculpture Stående kvinde stands at the corner of Østergade and Hærvejen in Rødekro. Rise Church is located in the village of Rise, which today has practically merged with northern Rødekro. The Local Historical Archive in Rødekro focuses on the historical, topographical and cultural conditions of Rødekro and the five surrounding parishes of Rise, Øster Løgum, Hjordkær, Hellevad and Egvad.

Plan Rødekro According to Your Interests

At Rødekro Svømmehal, AquaCross is a form of water aerobics. Those planning to hike or cycle can consider the Hærvejen stages separately from the fishing waters, dog forest, AquaCross and sites of cultural and historical interest.
