Bylderup-Bov: Railway Line, Church and Water Experiences

A Historic Beginning with the Railway

If you would like to combine a stay with local history and nature trails, the historical connection in Bylderup-Bov begins with the railway. The town grew up around a railway line built in 1867. The station was built in the open countryside between Bov and Bylderup because the two villages could not agree on its location.

The nature trail through Bylderup-Bov runs between the tracks of the disused railway section. The railway nature trail is accessible from Engvej, where there are good parking facilities. This makes it possible to combine the historic railway line with a walk.

There are two further concrete starting points for active days by the water. The Grønå canoe and kayak route has a starting point at the end of Ålykke in Bylderup-Bov. In addition, canoe trips begin on the Slogså.

Bylderup Church and Local History

The oldest parts of Bylderup Church date from the 13th century. Originally, it was the main church of Slogs Herred. The church features a Late Romanesque apse, chancel and nave.

During extensive restoration work in 1952, an attempt was made to return Bylderup Church to its original Romanesque form. During the renovation in 2015, the furnishings were restored or replaced in cooperation with the National Museum.

Next to the south portal of Bylderup Church stands a medieval armoury. This church building therefore brings together both medieval architectural elements and later measures to preserve and restore it.

Kirkekroen also reaches far back into local history: its history dates back to the 18th century. The community hall is known for the annual Højskoledage.

Water Areas for Different Plans

The outdoor swimming pool at Bylderup Idrætscenter purifies its water according to biological natural swimming pool principles, without chlorine. It has a large swimming pool, a shallow-water area with a beach edge, and a separate children's pool. The three areas offer different focuses, ranging from swimming and shallow water to a dedicated pool for children.

Slog Herreds Spejderhus is situated in a scenic setting approximately 100 metres from Slogs Ã…. Together with the nature trail and canoeing options, this creates a varied combination of paths, river landscape and water activities, while the church, railway line and community hall define the cultural side of the town.

Borderland History in Rens

The history of the borderland also includes the museum "Mellem Slesvigs Grænser" in the village of Rens. Rens lies southwest of Aabenraa and a few kilometres from the German-Danish border. The exhibition deals with the complicated history of the borderland and broadens the perspective on the historical topics surrounding Bylderup-Bov.
